Book Description

15 Mar 2008 British Walking Guides

Fully revised third edition of this classic 191-mile walk across northern England from the Irish Sea to the North Sea, inspired by Alfred Wainwright. Crossing three fabulous national parks – the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors – it samples the very best of the English countryside – rugged mountains and lakes, gentle dales and stone-built villages; wild moorland; sea cliffs and fishing villages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chris & Nikki 27 July 2009
Format:Paperback
Just completed our Coast to Coast walk using this book between 5th to 18th July 2009. Overall this is an excellent book, but I would make a few observations which would make it much better; i) make it smaller so it fit's into side pocket of hiking shorts/trousers, ii) take out all the flora and fauna info as this is unnecessary ie. stick to the hike - there are better books than this if you want to read about the natural history along the trail, iii) make complicated changes in direction and distances to and from better - a few hikers, us included, went wrong a few times due to unclear instructions (distance and time to changes in direction are so easy and invaluable). Overall - recommended, and smaller/easier to use the rivals we saw some other hikers using.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value guide 21 Aug 2009
By Nichola
Format:Paperback
This is an outstandingly good value and very useful guide. The most helpful features we found were:
1. Notes on the maps to reassure navigational decisions.
2. Town/village plans showing locations of b and bs, shops, pubs, etc. Enormously useful at the end of a (possibly wet and tiring) day's walking.
3. Honest opinions based on walker feedback re where to stay and eat.
It's an excellent companion to OS mapping to guide walkers along the trail.

1.0 out of 5 stars take a map 23 April 2013
Format:Paperback
I was just reviewing my journal of the c.2.c. in 2005. I normally have o/s maps but on this walk I had the stedman and thought that sufficient. Beware-Iost count of the times that I cursed the man and his dreadful line drawings. I met an american group who were as misplaced as I, luckily the day was clear and so we managed to decipher the stedman and go on our way. I repeat do not take the stedman without an o/s map. Not sure whether the revised editions are less frustrating(and dangerous).
