Without wishing to impugn the other enthusiastic reviewers, I feel I must add a small contribution. In my view the first of the two LPs issued on this CD, Coast Concert, is the greatest New Orleans style recording of the fifties - everyone I have ever played it to over the years have immediately made a purchase.
I first bought it as a 10" LP in 1956 and wore it out: it was then released as a 12"LP with an additional track which had only been released in the States - the thrill of hearing a 'new' track from a session I knew so well was a rare and exciting experience. Then came the CD with yet another this time not previously released track - yet more pleasure.
I think one of the reasons for its success and spontaneity is that the session was recorded through the night starting at 5.00pm and ending at 5.00am - a constant supply of beer and sandwiches being provided. Perhaps all jazz recordings should be made in this way - impractical, of course, but Jazz being what it is, almost invariably flourishes during these hours.
By normal standards you would think the second LP, Jazz Ultimate, to also be a superb session - it is only by comparison with the superb Coast Concert that it drops a point.
If you like New Orleans style jazz and want something to match the classics of the twenties, you should go for this one.
