Product Description

Review

"Coaching Women to Lead is timely, relevant, and hugely inspiring! The authors effortlessly demonstrate an approach that goes beyond conventional wisdom, bringing it to life with real world success stories, and doing so in a true coaching style that harnesses the strengths and rewards that coaching women can bring. This is essential reading for not only coaches, but L&D professionals, C-Suite executives, and any manager looking to realise the full potential from their female colleagues/ businesses." - Katherine Tulpa, CEO, Association for Coaching® and Co-founder, Wisdom8

Product Description

Coaching Women to Lead asks why, in the 21st century, there is still such a disparity in the number of women filling leadership roles, compared with men. It argues that a specific coaching approach for women is not only possible but required to support women throughout their corporate career. In this book you will find:

  • How to build a robust business case for coaching women
  • Which areas of coaching are the most useful at which career stage
  • An academic survey to discover what women need to succeed
  • In-depth interviews with women role models
  • Specific tools and techniques to develop a women-focused coaching programme.

Using case studies and findings from the authors' research, Coaching Women to Lead proposes defined areas for coaching women, and offers practical advice for coaches who wish to contribute to the development of excellent women leaders.

I bought this book last month and have found it a well written, concise and highly relevant book. There is so much talk right now in the media about getting more women on the boards of UK organizations it is also timely.

The book resonated on many different levels for me - I am a coach so the entire book is useful, but in particular the structure of the topics is easy to follow and makes complete sense. You can easily refer directly to the chapters which are relevant, but at the same time reading it cover to cover is also quite easy (There is a wealth of information in every chapter)

Topics covered include the business case for women in the workplace, specific 'case studies' are used through out to highlight relevant themes, common experiences from the many interviews conducted are reviewed, an outline of the general stages in a woman's career are made explicit, and then particular coaching interventions are suggested based on the issues specific to women.

As a female coach the book is phenomenal, but even more important, as a woman I was so pleased to be reading about myself! So much of the book gave voice to things I had never fully realized nor understood while I was working in the corporate world.

The book is helping me to plan my own career as well as coach others. Definitely now one of my top 10 coaching resources.

Based on quantitative and qualitative research, Coaching Women to Lead is an authoritative read that makes a strong case for differential support for women to progress their career into leadership. It is straight-talking and practical in tone and content which I think is excellent - no `clevering up' of coaching. It is arguably an essential read for executive coaches, talent managers and Equality & Diversity personnel. Line managers would also benefit and is an interesting read for women interested in elevating their career. The executive coach gleans practical techniques and approaches to use in coaching sessions (for example chapter 6 "Coaching women to lead - a systematic approach to coaching women for success") whilst the `within-organisation' professionals will gain an insight into what is needed at the different stages of a woman's career and life stage in order to retain and develop their talented female employees (Chapter 3 "What are the critical stages of a woman's career and their coaching requirements?" and Chapter 8 "How to develop a woman-friendly organisation"). The talent leakage is alarming and if the book can do anything it is to make the need for intervention abundantly clear. I would have liked a section covering real examples from named organisations on what innovative/effective activities are taking place to support women's journey up the ladder. They may be thin on the ground but they do exist and could inspire other organisations to do more.
