Product Description

"I have just read my first - and probably last - whole book on coaching. It is my last because it has done the job, giving me the most comprehensive examination of the art." David Amos, former Deputy Director of HR at the DoH, writing in the Health Service Journal.

  • What is coaching and how is it different from therapy or counselling?
  • What techniques and approaches does an effective coach use?
  • What distinguishes a ‘good enough’ coach from an outstanding one?
Coaching Skills helps readers to acquire the skills that are essential for becoming an outstanding coach. The book addresses key issues such as:
  • Creating the trust that encourages a client to learn
  • Keeping yourself and your own agenda out of the way without diminishing your presence
  • Managing your own anxiety, especially if you are inexperienced.
This practical and readable book is enlivened by many case studies to accompany the theory. Based on many years’ experience of what coaches actually struggle with in practice, it is a must for the growing band of executive and life coaches, as well as managers who want to learn how to adapt coaching as an approach to leadership.

This is the best book on the ACTUAL PROCESS of coaching I have read to date.

Many of the books out currently spend so much time talking about the differentiation of coaching from mentoring or therapy, or wallowing in the ego of the author's achievements, or telling you how to find a coach, etc., etc., that I have tended to lose all interest before finishing them.

Jenny Rogers' book is a clearly written practical aid and spends most of the time talking about things we really need to know and understand about delivering the service of coaching.

I would say she knows a thing or two about the subject. I guess the fact that it (my edition) is published by the Open University Press shows that other people have noticed this also! Buy this if you're interested in becoming a coach or indeed already are one!

This book has been a revelation. I have been involved in business coaching for over 10 years and am amazed how helpful this book has been. It has been encouraging that the book has reaffirmed a number of approaches and techniques I use. What has been far more useful is the way the book has made me challenge and reappraise my own practice and in some cases I will be changing what I do. The book is easy to read and full of very practical examples and case-studies. Thank you Jenny Rogers
