Product Description

Product Description

This book arises from a lifetime's practical experience of work with people with Asperger's syndrome and autism. People with Asperger's syndrome easily drop though the net and fall into the wrong services sometimes staying at home, depending on their families, sometimes falling into criminal justice or mental health services. Others, of course, fall into employment. Those between, and there are many, benefit from the coaching approach developed by Bill Goodyear, which is described in this book. The book is crammed with practical tips, real life stories and new thinking. So often research results arrive from highly specialised work this book attempts to synthesise a range of new learning from a number of fields and present a hopeful view of the condition there are many entry points to use to create the possibility of forward motion and development. Touching lightly on some specific and recurring problems, the book unpicks our current understanding of the condition and describes in details how to use coaching to empower and enable rather than to control and direct. Teachers, parents and other professional working with this population will find the book useful and interesting (and amusing!), as will people with Asperger's and those people who come into contact with the undiagnosed or unnoticed 'Aspies' health, education and social service professionals especially, but also coaches, therapists and complementary health practitioners.

About the Author

Bill Goodyear has spent a lifetime amongst people with autism, first as a teacher in one of the first schools founded by the National Autistic Society, then in a local voluntary society to his own school, offering education to a group of children who were excluded from any education at the time, and in his Asperger Coaching practice which he has been operating for nearly 20 years. In that time he has met hundreds of families living with autism and Asperger's syndrome and attended endless conferences exploring new research. He is father of three exciting and grown up children, a keen photographer and an unstoppable guitar player, and while he is a good cook, he is lousy at gardening. Having lived in Folkestone, Ealing, Andover, Adlestrop, Peterborough and Rotherham, he currently lives in London and travels extensively, talking about Asperger's syndrome, autism and life, and is developing his coaching into the neuro typical world, especially focussing on supporting people in making their own creative projects happen. He mainly uses his lifetime's experience of autism spectrum disorders to support families living with Asperger's, and within that he is finding ways to help mainstream organisations include people with Asperger and to help those with Asperger's to be included.

I am a parent with a late-developing high functioning Aspergers child. We have been struggling to find help for several years, and have quite a library of books on the topic. This is the first one I have read that hits the spot perfectly. It is easy to read, gives outstanding practical advice, is sensible, is clearly written by someone who has worked for years in the field - and knows what to do and how to guide parents and carers (and siblings) in what is a disturbing experience. This is a truly wonderful book, and I have sent copies to all those whom I know with similar issues. I cannot praise it too highly.

great book 28 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
Great book, packed with practical tips for managing life with Asperger's. Its easy - and maybe the de-fault position - to feel isolated and hopeless when you're an adult with Aspergers. And yet the experiences that are shared so vividly with the reader in this book break the aloneness and show a real way forward. The take home messages seem to be that having Asperger's does not exclude finding love, friendships, success and real independence. You just have to want it and be prepared to work for it (and laugh at yourself when you mess it up a few times). The author has written an interesting, informative, honest and helpful book for anyone struggling to cope with day to day life with asperger's, and it is well worth recommending to anyone who is in this position.

Well the author warns us in the preface that his approach is a 'slightly quirky approach' and that's where we should have stopped reading. This book is not only dissappointing, it is written in dense NLP jargon, which is not what I expected at all! We were utterly dissatisfied.
