This book is an excellent introduction to the developing field of supervision for coaches and mentors. The wide ranging contributions sit well together and despite one or two minor inconsistencies, parallels can be drawn between different chapters, allowing bigger themes to be identified. I really liked the inclusion in most chapters of further reading, questions and development activities to stimulate reflection and evaluations of the subjects under discussion, including in many cases, the pitfalls. Although it contains a lot of theoretical discussion, this book is rooted in the real world, with many chapters including organisational case studies. Although I only bought the book recently, it is already well-thumbed; I recommend it strongly.

I really liked this book - both as an initial read and also as an ongoing reference book. It provides an overview of the various models (some I hadn't come across before) as well as the different approaches and modes. The practical studies are useful too.
It's not a book that will sit on the shelf - defintely a fabulous reference book for new supervisors and the more experienced ones as a refresher. Well done - it was needed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Coaching & Mentoring Supervision 3 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback
This book brings together a range of different approaches to supervision. the breadth of material would make it an excellent text for those who are training people to be supervisors, whilst the more experienced supervisor would also find approaches and observations that would stimulate their thinking.

Many of the contributors outline the importance of understanding the supervisee's context and this was gratifying to read, given that many coaches come from counselling and psychotherapy where the emphasis tends to be on the individual.

Not all supervisors will relate to all of the models and some appear overly complicated with the risk of losing the supervisee under the weight of getting all bases covered within the model. Supervisors will need to find their own way, which is likely to be a blend of a range of approaches that work for them and their supervisees.

In summary this is a stimulating text, offering as it does a range of approaches which the reader can then explore in-depth should they wish to.

Clearly written, highly readable and deserving of being recognized as essential core text for those involved with the practice of supervision.
This compilation of chapters written by international specialists in their field invokes curiosity, raises awareness and stimulates learning about supervision. The text is a welcome addition to that which is currently available for the growing profession of coaching and mentoring. Theoretical models, approaches and practical case studies are effortlessly blended together to showcase a range of perspectives on supervision. These are presented within an organizational systems context to provide a well-referenced resource for supervisors, coaches, mentors, business users of coaching and mentoring and providers of supervision training.

Once I became used to the layout of the book I found it really useful to move between chapters to compare and contrast. As supervision becomes more relevant for all involved in coaching and mentoring it's good to see an acknowledgment of the range of approaches available although I must confess to having flicked through some of the more complex methods with less attention than the well illustrated practical models. I've just completed a Diploma in Supervision and have found this book supportive reading and would highly recommend it.
