Successful coaching is about finding solutions and optimizing a client's life. Insoo Kim Berg, one of the founders of solution-focused psychotherapy, shows how to achieve these goals by applying this unique approach to coaching. All coaches, as well as therapists, will benefit from these techniques for creating effective and transformative conversations.

This book is required reading for any coach. It is rare to come across such an elegantly written, wise and helpful book that presents with clarity what exactly effective coaches do and how they do it. In a field full of band-aid type fixes and ego-stroking hype it's refreshing to read a book that offers so much.
If you are interested in improving your coaching skills you need this.
This book presents a simple and effective approach for coaching: the solution-focused approach. Together with her husband and their team Insoo Kim Berg co-originated this approach many years ago. First, it developed within the field of psychotherapy. Now, it is spreading throughout institutions like schools, business organizations, and consultancy firms.
This coaching approach is highly goal-focused and respectful. The great thing is it often works very fast, hence the book title "brief coaching". After reading this book, every coaching will be able to understand the method and to start applying many of its principles. But becoming really good at it requires a lot of practise and discipline.
To my knowledge this is the first book in whicht the solution-focused principles are presented for an audience of coaches. I can't think of any two people more suited for delivering this message to that audience. Insoo is one of the people who invented this approach and Peter is an experienced coach. They succeeded quite well in writing an accessible and interesting book.

5.0 out of 5 starsHighly Recommended For Personal-Growth Coaches25 Feb 2006

I wish every coach in the personal-growth industry adopted the solution-focused, efficient-coaching principles presented in this book. Long-term coaching relationships often benefit the coach more than the client. Today, the process of coaching with integrity is to collaborate with the client rather than promise to fix them. Through strategic conversations and negotiations, coaches can quickly focus on the solution, identify the client's current resources, and organize the most efficient and affordable road map for change. Whether that require one session or ten, Berg and Szabo teach coaches how to do this by placing the responsibility of results in the client's lap, while allowing the coach to act as guide--not guru.

2.0 out of 5 starsCashing in on Coaching2 Mar 2006

This is not really a book about coaching. There are many other books that assist coaches to learn about ways of assisting clients and they are actually written by experienced coaches. "Total Life Coaching" by Dr. Patrick Williams is just one example. Instead, the author-experts have taken a useful technique (solution-focused psychotherapy) and applied it to coaching. Readers will learn about the technique, but I think it has less to do with real coaching and more to do with therapists and book publishers cashing in on the latest trend in working with people who want to achieve their dreams.
