5.0 out of 5 stars Coaching for the novuce 27 July 2010
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent book to read, if like myself you have gone from touchline parent to hands on coaching and running a junior football team. It guides you through the maze of what is expected of you and what you should expect from the children and how to approach and deal with the parents. Have been coaching junior football for a year now and still look through the book for guidance. It is strictly as the title says. Excellent book

5.0 out of 5 stars a must-read for new coaches 8 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a great book. If, like me, you got into football coaching by being a touchline parent helping out at training and matches for your sons football team, and you are now looking to get more involved and take your FA Level 1 badge and / or coach a team, then this book is a must-read. Even though it's not packed with loads of drills like other books are, it goes into more detail of other areas that aren't covered by those books.

Other books I can recommend to for essential reading after this one are "Coaching the Coach: A Complete Guide How to Coach Soccer Skills Through Drills" and "Coaching Mini Soccer: A Tried and Tested Program of Essential Skills and Drills for 5 to 10 Year Olds" (both by Richard Seedhouse) and then "Soccer Academy: 100 Defending Practices and Small Sided Games" and "The Soccer Academy: 140 Overload Games and Finishing Practices" (both by Michael Beale).

Want to know a book to avoid ? - "101 Great Youth Soccer Drills: Skills and Drills for Better Fundamental Play" by Robert Koger. The drills are really confusing, even to more experienced coaches than myself that I've shown them to.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very basic - a book for managers, not coaches 8 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is aimed at someone who is about to take over a kids' football/soccer team, who (1) has never played or seen football (2) has never been around children or the parents of children (3) is a newcomer to Planet Earth.

Ok, it is not that bad, and clearly a lot of thought has gone into it. There is some useful guidance. It is not unhelpful, by any means. My quibble with the book is that it is really a book for managers rather than for coaches. There are few drills, and the focus of the book is not on coaching at all. It is not a book that will help you to plan a season of training sessions. It tells you little about how you can try to improve and develop players. If I had browsed through this in a shop, I doubt I would have bought it.
