Contemplate, Prepare and then Do!,

This review is from: Coach Yourself: It's Your Life, What are You Going to Do with It? (Paperback)
As an NLP Practitioner and Life Coach I have read a great many books on coaching and personal change and this is a book that really grabbed my attention... It is jam-packed with solid and sound advice, information and exercises that if practiced could genuinely help you make some real and significant change. There is plenty of information on the processes and stages of change as well as a concise personal change programme at the end of the book that distills all of the previous chapters into a highly workable self-coaching model. I highly recommend this book - 5 stars!

No hype, no hocus-pocus, no hare-brained woo woo nonsense. This is a refreshingly down-to-earth book, based on sound psychology, made totally practical. If you work through the chapters and apply the tools, frameworks and exercises as you go (and keep going) you will coach yourself to change, in 12 chapters. How do they do it?
The techniques, approaches and frameworks used will be familiar to many coaches, and some psychologists. I've read many papers and articles by Dr Grant, who has made a learned contribution to the coaching psychology literature. This book is aimed straight at Joe Public. So `The House of Change' helps you see that we need to work on our situation, thoughts, feelings and behaviour if we're going to achieve a goal that requires change. If any one of those walls crumbles, the whole house will come down. There are dozens of exercises in the book, as well as tips to stop procrastinating, to stay on track, to handle change. For research geeks there are `what does the research show?' snippets to back up the material. For the pragmatists, there are simple steps to complete at the end of each chapter. `It's your life. What are you going to do with it?' is really a workbook, based on a programme successfully developed over five years by psychologists at University of Sydney, where Dr Grant heads the Coaching Psychology Unit. Jane Green is an expert in distance learning. Between them they've come up with a real winner. Highly recommended.

One of the very best self coaching books,

I am a professional coach and I recommend this book to most of the executives I work with. Anthony Grant & Jane Greene have done an excellent job of distilling many years of research findings into a practical guide on personal change. It is simple but not simplistic, and based on researched and validated processes. If you want to find out more about the studies underlying the approach, there is a full bibliography. One piece of advice, it is very easy to read the book through quickly (i did so on a train journey from one end of the UK to the other) but you won't get much out of it unless you do the exercises in each chapter. The authors provide a great model on how to coach yourself, though you will need discipline and self awareness to work successfully on your own. As the authors suggest, finding someone else to work through it with you is a great idea. I use this book with executives I am coaching. Many of the exercises such as 'letter from the future' result in inspiring moments. Chapter 6 is one of the best descriptions I've read of how to tackle Self Limiting Beliefs. (I prefer that term to the authors 'Automatic Negative Thoughts', because these beliefs can be expressed positively but still limit us.) A great resource.
