Product Description

John Grant is back! Bestselling author of Green Marketing Manifesto fame returns to get you involved in creating a sustainable future!

In this book, green business guru John Grant shows how we, when we join forces through co-operative initiatives, can really make changes and work towards a better future.

John uses cases and examples from around the world, from social networks to social ventures, Carrot Mobbing to the Carbon Disclosure Project, to show how a move to greater co-operation via what he calls Co-operative Networks can be a way forwards for all of us to increase the common well-being.

Arguing that a climate for change can be created by engaging rather than alienating people, John also demonstrates ways of ‘relocating dreams’ to allow us to reassess our desires and priorities.

Whether you are a business leader, politician, armchair economist, environmentalist or general interest reader, the inspiration and ideas John Grant provides in Co-Opportunity encourages us all to think again about our individual behaviour and our actions – our ideas of what it is to be human - and to get co-creating to build a better world for all. Sit back and watch, or become part of this grass roots new movement.

There's something very satisfying, but in no way smug, about the sensory qualities of John Grant's latest book, Co-opportunity. It looks and feels hand-made, or should I say crafted? It is a book that invites handling, holding, participation, rather than a glossy coffee table book that you're scared of leaving your fingerprints on.

This quality also pervades the content. Yes, you can criticise the grammar and punctuation in places, or even the slightly haphazard way that topics are thrown together, but this misses the point. This book is about ideas, not execution. And these ideas go far beyond John's original stamping-ground of marketing and communications. Although he may not be the world's top expert on economics, you can feel his explorational spirit as he forays into new areas with his characteristic enthusiasm and optimism.

What appeals to me is the mix of theory, of examples and of anecdotes on the subject of how humanity can work together for a better future. Some chapters were of more obvious relevance to my own work, such as the one on alternatives to consumerism. But the book transcends simply what we "do in our work": it suggests ways that we can make (sometimes small) changes in our everyday lives, in co-operation with others, to create a world that works better.

The attitude and tonality of the book is another of its positive aspects. There is an underlying optimism and positive belief in human nature here that makes you want to roll up your sleeves and get involved right now. The past and existing systems are not criticised en masse, rather, the approach is to see what's not broken (yet), use that, learn from the past, from nature, from technology, from the human spirit and move forward.

How do we move from an increasingly broken world, dominated by materials and growth to one centered on community and people, motivated by fixing and making things better, inspired by natural systems and personal wellbeing?

John Grant's Co-Opportunity is a wealth of interesting thoughts, ideas and examples of people led, creative approaches to generating a positive, exciting, sustainable future. Bucket loads of inspiration and references, it's sustainability meets community mashed up in a web 2.0 kind of way.

If you're troubled by the challenges of sustainability but believe in the human spirit to collaborate and find solutions, Co-Opportunity is a fine read.

This was the first book I had read from John Grant.
And the main thing that struck me was that he's not aiming to preach.
He's aiming to inspire.
He backs up his arguments with evidence and shows clear steps we can all take, to work together and create a sustainable world.
Basically, if we continue to consume in the manner of the last few decades, then we're going to be in for real trouble.
Rather than scare-mongering and leaving people feeling terrible, John Grant wants us to see how we can grasp this opportunity - together - to make a transformation.
If you're happy with the status quo, then best leave this book where it is.
If you're ready to get out there and do something, then you might want to let Co-Opportunity inspire you.
