Having sustained a prolific output of material over his long career, Milton Nascimento is recognised, both domestically and internationally, as one of Brazil's greatest performers. A mellifluous voice that cleverly articulates the natural cadences of the Portuguese language, his music has a sumptuous quality that has consistently resisted stylistic and lyrical predictability. Produced with the help of Marcio Borges, Fernando Brant and Ronaldo Bastos,
Clube Da Esquina is undoubtedly one of the finest examples of his stunning ability to produce engaging music so diverse that it is impossible to bracket. The eloquence of the songs is profound, their impact transcending the tongue in which they are vocalised. The epic strings of "Um Gosto de Sol", flamenco twang of "Dos Cruces" and restless percussion of "Cravo e Canela" each tell their own exquisite story, but remain only parts of a book unwavering in it's quality. Infused with an inspirational optimism, this album is the work of a remarkable talent. --

The great Brazilian singer Elis Regina once said, "If God were to sing, it would be with the voice of Milton". She probably meant it as a compliment to God. Of all the amazing sounds to come out of Brazil, few are as distinctive or as moving as the voice of Milton Nascimento.
CLUBE DA ESQUINA ("Corner Club") is a 1972 collaboration with friend and fellowmusician Lo Borges. Joined by a talented group of musicianswhom the two had grown up with in the Minas Gerais districtof Brazil, Nascimento and Borges cover a startlingly broad range of styles and moods, from folk-influenced tunes of love and lament to rock-tinged songs that veil protest under a gauze of poetry. While the music draws heavily on the roots of Brazilian music, it also takes in elements of pop and rock that only enhance its impact. The influence of the Beatlesis unmistakable, but never overbearing. And the use of unusual musical details--jagged chord progressions, odd time signatures--adds depth and colour without detracting from the simplicity and directness that lie at the heart of these songs. In short, this is a great work from a great musical artist.
