BOC is a band that has constantly renewed itself during its career. Indeed, what is there in common between, say, an album like "tyranny and mutation" and this 1985 record ?Club Ninja features some really catchy tunes, like "Dancing in the ruin" or "Make rock not war" and in that respect can be compared to "Agents of fortune", one of their more commercial albums. But where "Agents of fortune" was sometimes poppy, this album has a really heavy feel to it, sometime sounding very much like the typical 80's hard rock music, with the boys singing the chorus altogether and the catchy guitar riff behind, sometime showing the typical BOC sound, with eerie atmospheres and very weird lyrics indeed.
This is an excellent album because BOC have always been very good at delivering immediate songs that go straight into your head and never leave. On the other hand it still sounds like BOC, so the band has nothing to be ashamed of.Although it is very commercial it failed to chart and this is a wonder because "Club Ninja " is a massive record, one of their finest anyway. Outrageously underrated !

Probably the nadir of blue oyster cult,as poor an album as you will ever hear under the Cult banner.

Lets cut to the chase only two tracks are worthy of this great band, namely 'Perfect Water' and 'Madness to the Method'

The rest ranging from facsimile pop 'White Flags' & 'Dancin In The Ruins'
to plain average 'When The War Comes Home' to the absolute drivel of the remaing tracks especially 'Make Rock Not War'

With Bouchard and Lanier gone, the cult was rudderless, the end seemed inevitable.

Just a thought regards this release.although my UK vinyl copy has long since been sold,im sure this recording is slightly different,i remember reading at the time that the USA version had a different mix.

This album seems to split the groups fan base, they either love it or they detest it with a vengenance.Personally I really rate this album highly. It covers most of the bases with the classic rock of 'Dancin in the ruins',which is not that dissimilar to either'Burnin for you',or 'The Reaper',to the prog rock tracks of 'Madness to the Method',or the sublime 'Perfect Water'.
The album is not perfect but the 5 stars that I have given is for the what the group did. When this album was released there was an upsurge in the style over substance rock scene, bands like Bon Jovi,Motley Crue were getting chart success after a few years of hanging around on the sidelines, new fans were discovering 'Classic Rock',so BOC created an album to tap into this burgoning scene.Yes it upset a large number of fans, but you either evolve or die.
Sadly in house fighting didn't help the band. But they have redeemed themselves with the album 'Imaginos'.
I am glad this has been remastered and reissued.Hard rock not really, classic rock and a classic album yes.
