Product Description

Charged with gross incompetence, Satan is fired from his job as Prince of Hell and exiled to that most terrible of places: English suburbia. Forced to live as a human under the name of Jeremy Clovenhoof, the dark lord not only has to contend with the fact that no one recognises him or gives him the credit he deserves but also has to put up with the bookish wargamer next door and the voracious man-eater upstairs.

Heaven, Hell and the city of Birmingham collide in a story that features murder, heavy metal, cannibalism, armed robbers, devious old ladies, Satanists who live with their mums, gentlemen of limited stature, dead vicars, petty archangels, flamethrowers, sex dolls, a blood-soaked school assembly and way too much alcohol.

Clovenhoof is outrageous and irreverent (and laugh out loud funny!) but it is also filled with huge warmth and humanity. Written by first-time collaborators Heide Goody and Iain Grant, Clovenhoof will have you rooting for the bad guy like never before.

F. Paul Wilson: "Clovenhoof is a delight. A funny, often hilarious romp with a dethroned Satan as he tries to adjust to modern suburbia. The breezy, ironic prose sets a perfect tone. If you need some laughs, here's the remedy."

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Funny 1 Aug 2012
By Martin
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I don't review all that many books, but Clovenhoof is quirky and different, which is my main reason for writing this on Amazon. Besides being
different, it is also very funny and often hilarious. There are number of laughs in every single page and some scenes are laugh out loud - a real
scream, reminiscent in some ways of Tom Sharpe.

The set up is that Satan has been thrown out of hell and sent to Earth. He meets up with a number of characters, and gets into various scrapes. My favourite character was Nerys, a sex-mad woman who manages to be both domineering and bullying at the same time. Tom Sharpe fans will know the type from classics like the Wilt books. She is partnered with the nerd-wimp type, who manages to get himself in all manner of trouble, and also
Clovenhoof himself, who is a mix of evil genius but clueless and naive at the same time.

All the while we have mixed in the scenes from Heaven (including St Michael, Francis of Assissi and Mother Theresa) and Hell. I found Hell the
funnier (although Heaven has more laughs than you might expect for such a "nice" place), with some rather British scenes of the victims complaining
about the overcrowding, poor queue-management and "lack of information".

There's something of the Olympic Opening Ceremony about this book. It appeals first and foremost to a British audience. There are constant
references which will make UK readers laugh, and the scenes author/s have dreamed up are heavily overlaid with British black humour, in a tradition
stretching back to Death at Funeral (the original one), League of Gentlemen, Tom Sharpe of course, but also Gavin and Stacey.

4.0 out of 5 stars Meet Jeremy the new devil in town... 17 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Jeremy Clovenhoof is new in town. He has a fondness for copious amounts of Lambrini and, excuse the pun, a devil-may-care attitude when it comes to other people's money and possessions. Ok, so technically he's the Angel of the Abyss but that doesn't make him a bad guy does it? His various attempts to blend in and lead a quiet life in suburbia all tend to end in a spectacular fashion. He throws himself into every situation with such demented enthusiasm, it's impossible not to warm to his particular brand of lunacy. Personally, I found his attempts to teach at a local school, and holding a dinner party, were particular highlights.

Clovenhoof's bemused neighours often get dragged along for the ride when it comes to his wacky schemes. Ben, a shy bookseller, find himself in the unenviable situation of swiftly becoming Satan's BFF. Meanwhile, Nerys is on the look out for the ideal man. Is her suave, slightly bonkers new acquaintance the man of her dreams?

Ben and Nerys watched him circulate around the room. "I swear he's concussed," said Nerys.

"I think he's Swedish," said Ben.

"His English is flawless."

"That's the Swedes for you. Natural linguists."

I think that it's fair to say that Clovenhoof has an undeniably silly premise, but the good news is that the plot absolutely revels in this silliness. The reader gets to meet a rather amiable version of Satan who is at odds with almost everything around him. The various culture clashes he experiences form the basis of most of the novel's many humorous moments. I was impressed that the plot manages to get more and more outlandish with every passing chapter but still seems to maintain a weird sort of sense.

I read an advance copy of this and LOVED it. From the first few pages you become immersed in the characters and their worlds and the book is hilariously funny throughout. These things combined with the story really ramping up towards the end makes it very hard to put down once you've started and makes you sad to see it end.
Would definitely recommend whether you normally read in this genre or not

5.0 out of 5 stars Clovenhoof 29 April 2013
By Joo (in UK) TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the story of when Satan got kicked out of hell and goes to live in a Birmingham suburb. He is forced to live in a flat in a converted house and makes friends with his neighbours. Of course, Satan being Satan, he has no "people skills" and no knowledge of financial matters.

I found this a really funny story. Satan, or Jeremy Clovenhoof as he is now known as, just doesn't understand real life and the effects of what does and what he says to people.

As I was reading this, I was picturing it as a sitcom. Most of the action is set in the flats or the pub and there were some great one-liners.

5.0 out of 5 stars So funny... 14 April 2013
By Kate
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book, very funny. I have also read and enjoyed the two short stories that follow, Clovenhoof's Shed, and Clovenhoof goes to night school.

Hell has undergone a corporate restructure and Satan has been restructured out of his post.. and so has been sent to live as the human 'Jeremy Clovenhoof' in a Birmingham flat. The plot and characters gave me plenty of chuckles. I ended up really liking the Clovenhoof character, his way of thinking and operating, his frankness, and even his ideas of fine dining (plenty of Lambrini and Findus Crispy Pancakes).

I would certainly recommend this book.
