Book Description

An important and revelatory exploration of Clough's enduring rivalry with and enmity towards Don Revie

Product Description

Don Revie and Brian Clough were born a brisk walk away from each other in Middlesbrough, in 1927 and 1935 respectively. They were brought up in a town ravaged by the Depression and went on to become highly successful professional footballers. Then, as young managers, they both took clubs languishing in the doldrums (Leeds United and Derby County) and moulded them into championship winners.

Despite the myriad similarities, these two sons of the Tees were as different in character as Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy. A bitter rivalry developed between them, which in turn enlivened and then blighted English football in the 1960s and '70s.

In Clough and Revie, exclusive interviews with players, relatives and friends shed fresh light on these two intriguing characters. Part footballing chronicle, part social history, the book is a revelatory exploration of the rivalry between the two men. It brings a fresh perspective on their early years in the North-East, tells how they nearly became teammates and explains why the feud began and what its repercussions were.

If you thought that you knew everything about this pair you will be pleasently surprised by this book. The author takes you right back to their roots in the North East and tracks them to Cloughs infamous 44 days at Leeds. As a 53 year old liftime football fan I remember them more as famous managers then players. The author has done some meticulous research on their early family life which went onto form the character of these two men. The book also gives an insight into the social history of the area that they grew up in.

I discovered things about the two of them that I would never have known if I not read this book. I have read quite a few of the many books published about these two so do not be put off if you have done the same. I am sure you will find something new about these two fascinating men. An enjoyable and informative read.

Excellent book for those who can remember these great football managers.
Also a social history of the times they were growing up. Also a real insight as to player's pay and behaviour. Very interesting comparing to todays players.
I would definitely recommend to those interested in football & its history.

Two reviews here, my cousin Tim's then mine:
`This book is mainly for the football anorak and a must read for those interested in these men and their era in football. As we journey through their lives and careers we gain insights into the huge changes going on not only in football, but society as a whole, and the media in particular. Along the way we learn to appreciate how tough life was for the working communities in Middlesborough in the middle part of the last century, as well as some fascinating snippets on its history. However you feel about either men, you have to admire the success they both achieved and the obstacles they overcame on their respective journeys.
For this reason the book could appeal to a wider audience beyond just the football anorak. The reader will not only reflect on the huge changes in football, but also in the wider world that have occurred again since that time.
I am happy to endorse this author. The writing style and narrative made for easy reading and his extensive research has much to commend.'

I think what this book showed me is that if you have the energy, the talent, the drive and the ambition then there's a good chance you'll get the job done. Then persevere (and make your own luck) and you have a chance of success. Roger Hermiston shows that there is not necessarily the right way to do things, but there is the right way for you to do them. These two men did things their very different ways and both succeeded. A good book, well worth reading.
