Amazon.co.uk Review

The world of animated movies, you might think, revolves purely around what Disney-Pixar and DreamWorks are up to. But then along came Sony with Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs and shook things up. For here is one of the most charming, imaginative animated films of 2009, and it looks sensational in high definition.

Its story is actually quite slight, and arguably the film’s biggest weakness is that it stretches it a little too thin. Based on the book by Judi and Ron Barrett, the charming story is of a young inventor by the name of Flint, whose track record leaves plenty to be desired. Yet one day, he comes up with a machine that manages to, via a series of circumstances, make it rain food. That’s cheeseburgers one day, drumsticks the next, cakes on another, that sort of thing. Inevitably, this attracts the attention of the world, and inevitably, problems start to arise.

In spite of its slight problems, however, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs is a bright, vibrant, colourful triumph. Bless with a superb voice cast and some sparkling visuals, the film has broad family appeal, and plenty of rewatch value. Plus, as you might hope, its broad colour palette looks simply sumptuous in high definition. It’s a cavalcade of striking visuals, superbly transferred to 1080p. Matched up to a very active surround-sound track, the combination of terrific main feature and equally strong transfer make Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs one of the very family Blu-rays on the market. And the likes of Disney and DreamWorks? There’s very much a new competitor in town… --Simon Brew

Synopsis

Inspired by Ron and Judi Barrett's beloved children's book of the same name, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs follows inventor Flint Lockwood (voice of Bill Hader) and a brainy weathergirl (voice of Anna Faris) as they attempt to discover why the rain in their small town has stopped, and food is falling in its place. Meanwhile, lifelong bully Brent (voice of Andy Samberg) relishes in tormenting Flint like he did when they were kids, and Mayor Shelbourne (voice of Bruce Campbell) schemes to use Flint's latest invention -- a device designed to improve everyone's lives -- for his own personal gain. Mr. T voices by-the-books cop Earl Devereaux, and James Caan voices Flint's technophobe father, Tim.

Meet Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader), the eccentric wannabe scientist, whose inventions haven't yet proved helpful, but when his latest contraption, the Flint Lockwood Diatomic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator (Or the FLDSMDFR for short...) gets rocketed into the sky, strange things start to happen to the sardine town of Swallow Falls.

The film is based on the book by Judi Barrett, which apparently everyone has read... apart from me obviously.

My favourite character in the film is Steve the Gummy Bear Obsessed Monkey who wears one of Flint's previous inventions, the Monkey Thought Translator.

Sam Sparks (Anna Faris) is sent to cover the 'food weather', but when the food starts getting bigger, Flint realises he has bitten of more than he can chew, so he calls in Sam for help.

The film is very funny, but when it tries to hit sensitive issues, such as the death of Flint's mother, it comes across very cheesy. All in all it is a very good movie, and if you haven't seen it I suggest you do!

My 6 year old grand daughter enjoyed this film and has watched it several times. Even my wife and I enjoyed it. The animation is very good and colours are excellent. I rated it 3 stars as, all in all, it was a good film but there are better. It was enjoyable, so I don't want to put people off buying it.

This was a lovely movie about the dreams we hold as children and the hope that we may one day achieve them. The comedy is light hearted, the visuals are mouth-wateringly stunning (especially the Jelly Mall) and the story itself, holds your attention. I believe the movie was aimed at all ages, as there was something for everyone. I can truely say that I was looking forward to this DVD arriving and it did not disappoint, I would whole-heartedly recommend this to anyone.

I thought non-Pixar CG movies were a waste of time!
This movie is great! Probably not to everyone's taste - it is quite geeky in its humour as well as topic, even though the comic timing is spot-on. Read more

Mediocre best that can be said about this story and the characters. Interesting idea but would have worked better as a short. Not enough of the wit and charm we've seen from Pixar.
