Book Description

4 Oct 2001
Sir John Mills is one of Britain's best-known, and best-loved, actors. This autobiography charts his life from the early beginnings in music hall song-and-dance routines, to the days of Cavalcade and Jill Darling to the film epics, In Which We Serve, Ice Cold in Alex, Scott of the Antarctic and his Oscar-winning performance in Ryan's Daughter. A new chapter brings the book fully up-to-date, revealing the drama, farce and tragedy - not to mention some spectacular falls - which have been a part of a life that is as varied as it is successful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb 23 Jun 2003
Format:Paperback
I love this book.

Sir John's lifestory spans most of the 20th century (he was born in 1908) and his book paints a wonderful picture of the halcyon days of the movie world. Sir John writes of happy and sad times and evokes wonderful imagery of times gone by, of people long since passed but not forgotten.

I enjoyed reading the first edition of this book about 15 years ago and this has led to a love for Noel Cowards plays and those wonderful 1940's and 50's films that Sir John starred in. His down to earth advice about relationships and the warmth and loyalty of his friendships are inspiring.

Sir John is one of our brightest stars ... it is difficult to paraise this book highly enough - simply a must read for anyone who loves the movies or the theatre.

A very interesting autobiography and quite amusing in places. A really enjoyable read, although not fully up to date as its a fairly old book..

5.0 out of 5 stars Up in The Clouds, Gentleman Please. 12 July 2011

A great read. John mills certainly knew how to enjoy his life, and in the process helped others to enjoy theirs.
He had the knack of creating an air of fun through his sunny personality, which shone out of the pages of his autobiography. Also, he was lucky in meeting Mary Haley Bell and marrying her. She was the love of his life, and he was left us in know doubt about her enriching his life. This book will cheer up the most miserable of persons.
