Product Description

At sixteen Verity becomes sole heiress to a fortune founded on the wool mills of Yorkshire and realises for the first time that she is no more than a pawn in the games of ambitious men. Obedient to the conventions of the Victorian age, she accepts a marriage of convenience and cloaks her proud spirit in the silks and satins of a society hostess. But for Verity Barforth convention is not enough. When at last she falls in love it is not with her husband, and she becomes the centre of a powerful drama of infidelity, jealousy and revenge, played out against the magnificent landscapes of the Yorkshire moors and the brutal poverty of the mills.

‘A vast exciting tapestry of love, hate and death . . . held me to the end’ James Herriot

‘A touching and ultimately satisfying love story.’ Jilly Cooper

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites 17 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the first of 3 books about the Barforth family. I first read every Brenda Jagger book I could many years ago. They have been out of print for some time and its great to be able to get them all on Kindle A wonderful story with characters you become very involved with A real insight to what it was like to be a woman in the early 1800's. Love, hate, laughter and tears it has it all. A book to read more than once, great value for money

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book 7 April 2013

The Barforth Trilogy are brilliant books. I read them many years ago and have recently purchased them for my kindle. I was very disappointed with the way they have been produced for the kindle. The grammar in places was dreadful. There are words missing, some words mistyped and the letter I appearing all over the place. I'm sure some of this first book was missing completely. A great shame for such wonderful books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Story brilliant. Copy typing abysmal. 20 Mar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Loved the story. A brilliant old fashioned family saga with no complicated dual time frames . How refreshing to be able to enjoy a simple straightforward good story. However I was disappointed with the many typing errors which really spoilt my overall enjoyment of the novel.Towards the end a whole chunk of the story appeared to be missing. I am delighted that brilliant books, now out of print, are being reproduced digitally but please can publishers ensure that content is reproduced accurately.
