At sixteen Verity becomes sole heiress to a fortune founded on the wool mills of Yorkshire and realises for the first time that she is no more than a pawn in the games of ambitious men. Obedient to the conventions of the Victorian age, she accepts a marriage of convenience and cloaks her proud spirit in the silks and satins of a society hostess. But for Verity Barforth convention is not enough. When at last she falls in love it is not with her husband, and she becomes the centre of a powerful drama of infidelity, jealousy and revenge, played out against the magnificent landscapes of the Yorkshire moors and the brutal poverty of the mills.

‘A vast exciting tapestry of love, hate and death . . . held me to the end’ James Herriot

‘A touching and ultimately satisfying love story.’ Jilly Cooper

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites 17 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the first of 3 books about the Barforth family. I first read every Brenda Jagger book I could many years ago. They have been out of print for some time and its great to be able to get them all on Kindle A wonderful story with characters you become very involved with A real insight to what it was like to be a woman in the early 1800's. Love, hate, laughter and tears it has it all. A book to read more than once, great value for money

The story pulls you in. There is a real depth of character in all the characters in the books that draw you into caring about them, especially the heriones ... In this case Verity. The background of the trilogy charts the change in society when machines appeared and more importantly, how women's roles began to change which i found facinating.

Bello really should try harder . This kindle edition is almost unreadable because of the typos. A huge disservice to,what would otherwise be a good, entertaining read.

Do not wish to read the rest of the series, found it far too long-windedly, and didn't hold my attention.

This is a good story completely ruined by very poor editing. It is absolutely full of typographical and punctuation mistakes.

This is a good story but the terrible punctuation and misspelling is putting me off buying the next in the series.
