Product Description

Product Description

Christina and Will have escaped Flambards for London with their heads full of dreams, only to find a whole new set of problems. Not only the basic ones of work and a place to live, but Will's single-minded ambition to desing and pilot flying machines, which terrify Christina every time he leaves the ground. Will is certain he can become a success, but what price is he willing to pay for the glory? A Carnegie Medal winner in 1969, this novel is now reissued in a smaller format mass-market paperback.

Format:Paperback
As it's the second book in a series of four, I wouldn't recommend reading The Edge of the Cloud on its own, but it stands out as my favourite. The story of Christina, Will, and aeroplanes is a wonderful tale of why women love single minded men who ignore basic feminine needs (like when he gets his friend to tell her he's gone to Switzerland instead of telling her in person). He flies her over the channel and crash lands the plane, lets her stay up all night helping him fix the plane, and never changes out of his oily overalls. Yet she loves him because he's exciting, forward thinking, brainy (unlike his dumb brother), listens to jazz, and faithful. The beautifully evocative language gives their romance a tenderness missing from my description, while the heavy threat of the first world war is ever present, so there's a terrible poignancy hanging over all the joyous times, knowing things will never be the same again for Christina and Will, and the other fun loving characters.

A captivating novel 23 Nov 2000
Format:Paperback
Argueably the best novel out of the series, The Edge of A Cloud is a romance that will tug at the heart strings and keep the reader enthralled through to the last chapter. The author explicitly describes the hopes and dreams of a young ariman at the beginning of the 20th Century and the trials and tribulations faced by his girlfriend who cannot overcome her trepidation of flying and cause for his saftey.

As a fan of Flambards it is enticing to know what happens to Will and Christina when leave the great house. This sequal is not a let down, simply a further step into the imagination of one of the best authors around today.

I first read this novel when I was 13, eight years on I find it even more enjoyable, it has not lost any of the magic which first captivated me - an excellent read for everyone.
