Product Description

Sleevenotes by Alan Clayson . 'A Closer Look' was a collection of previously recorded works, containing all the big successes so far, and has many tracks produced by Steve Harley and Alan Parsons (of 'Dark Side Of The Moon' production fame). 'Love's A Prima Donna' contains Steve's well-timed revival of George Harrison's 'Here Comes The Sun' which he thrust into the UK Top Ten during 1976's extraordinarily warm July Tracks: A Closer Look: Make Me Smile (Come Up And see Me) /Mr. Raffles /Panorama /Hideaway /Sebastian /Sweet Dreams /Psychomodo /Mr. Soft /Mirror Freak /Tumbling Down / Love’s A Prima Donna: Seeking A Love /GI Valentine /Finally A Card Came /Too Much Tenderness /(Love) Compared With You /(I Believe) Love's A Prima Donna /Sidetrack II /Seeking A Love (Part II) /If This Is Love (Give Me More) /Carry Me Again /Here Comes The Sun /Innocence And Guilt /Is It True What They Say?

I rember buying both these albums.
A Closer Look is an Earlyish Best Of Harley, featuring the known hits and a couple of songs that deserved to be captured (Mirror Freak, Hideaway.......)
Prima Donna was a clever album where Harley explored themes and presented us with this varied album which until now had disappeared. Very good music. Here Comes the Sun is included but does not really fit in with the other songs.

It was great to find this collection, Love's a Prima Donna an excellent studio album from 1976 - the fifth from Cockney Rebel coupled with A Closer Look, which was a best of compilation from 1975. Some fine tracks on both, especially (Love) Compared With You and Here Comes the Sun.

'Best Of' Steve Harley compilation combined with an excellent 'story' of a young lad "seeking a love to share his pillow...". He finds love...Here Comes The Sun (brilliant 1976 version of The Beatles original)...loses love. From Love's A Prima Donna the best tracks are undoubtedly Here Comes The Sun and one of the best romantic songs I've ever heard...a tear-jerker...Love (Compared With You).
From the Best Of....Sebastian (an orchestra of emotion - play it loud!) and Tumbling Down (my personal all-time favourite...) both tracks featured in Velvet Goldmine glam rock movie with Euan MacGregor.
Grab this bargain double....you'll listen over and over!!!

Nice compilation - and contrast 30 Jun 2003
By D. C Peterson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
"A Closer Look" was a vinyl compilation released in the USA in the mid-70's in an attempt to bring Americans' attention to Steve Harley, who was then quite succesful in England and elsewhere in Europe. It didn't work, and Harley remains a cult figure at best here. Fans of early Roxy Music and "Hunky Dory"/"Man Who Sold The World"-era Bowie should love his music. This is a good, concise overview of his 3 LP's at that time and has most of the best cuts from them (Sebastian; Tumbling Down; Make Me Smile) -- still, there's recent compilations available which surpass this.
I would have preferred pairing "Closer Look" with "Timeless Flight" (which I did on cassette for my car way back when), but it's an interesting contrast with "Love's A Prima Donna." This was my favorite Harley album back when it was released, but it has not aged all that well. LAPD is reliant on a great deal of studio gimmickry; think of the difference between early Bowie and "Heroes" (a better comparison may be Rundgren's "Something/Anything" and "A Wizard A True Star.") But that title track is a a great single, and this is, overall, a better compilation than the one which combines "Best Years Of Our Lives" (classic Harley) with the later, tamer and duller "The Candidate," about which the less said the better.

I had this on LP back in 1980 and had not heard it since. Maybe not the taste for mature years but it made me good back ground music if throwing a party or simular event. Overall I enjoyed it !

SO pleased with quality of the CD -- even better than described. Much faster shipping than estimated, too. VERY happy to highly recommend this seller!
