Product Description

Margot's been through a tough separation. But that's in the past now, she's moved out and moved on - or so she tells herself. But her new life isn't all she expected it to be. Her friends and family seem like strangers to her, she doesn't fit in at work anymore. She feels lonely and vulnerable until a chance encounter leads to an intense affair with Leon, a darkly charismatic photographer. Impulsively casting off her old life, Margot surrenders herself to Leon's charm and confidence. She isn't entirely sure what he sees in her, but she's certain that he's right for her. What she doesn't know is that Leon's previous girlfriend drowned in his bath and although the police report says it was suicide - it wasn't.

4.0 out of 5 stars Esther Verhoef--Close-Up, 9 April 2009
By Simon Clarke (Hackney London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This enjoyable tense chilling thriller is the author's
first novel to be translated into English from Dutch.
The plump Margot has recently come out of a long relationship
and feels at odds with herself, her job, and her family when she
meets a charismatic famous photographer,Leon.A passionate
relationship follows which changes Margot's life and view of
herself.Whilst having some doubts about Leon she feels that he
is the man for her,but what she does not know, and the reader does -is
that Leon's ex-girlfriend did not commit suicide in the bath --
she was murdered.Though a shade too long, the novel holds the
tension until the ending, which took me completely by surprise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting to read this new author for the UK, 27 May 2009
By Mrs. P. A. Thorne "pattieuk" (France) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
From the moment you pick up this book you are fooled by its secret, excited and thrilled by its intense writing. The character Margot is vunerable, believable and an everyday girl with quite a boring normal life. She meets a man on a plane and is thrown suddenly into a life of eccentrics and arty people who lead quite different and dangerous lives to her.
We are frightened for her as the story progresses and as the reader, know more than she does, but do we!!!!!!
This book is very plausable and has a fast pace and great writing and it is not ruined by translation. Esther Verhoef is a very prolific writer I believe, in Holland and we are so lucky to at last have her first book translated into english.

There is a thrilling and unexpected and surprising twist at the end and is one of the best books I have read in a long time.
Personally I cant wait for the next book, and I felt lost when I finished the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Generously given 3*, 5 Jul 2009
I thought the tale was overlong as well as another reveiwer - too much waffle. I found myself skipping bits as they rattled on about interior design or such and not actual plot. Promising 'recommended read' as I would have not really noticed it otherwise. I have never heard of the author and it's not surprising as this is the first novel she (Verhoef) has written. Apparantly this novel has sold over 500,000 copies......

I found the translation from the Dutch to be immpressive, a full 5*! Usually translations 'lose' something and feel jerky, stilted almost. This read as if it was written in English. Not sure if that's the translators work by choosing words to fit better or if it's just the way it's written.

The story really only gets 2.5* from me. A little mean maybe but I really couldn't get any more excited and the words hardly flew off the page. The plot twist comes within pages of the end and for my tastes was a little bit flimsy. If I wasn't intriuged by the obvious marketing ploys 'Recommended Read' 'The International Best Seller' 'Over 500,000 copies sold' I would have given up about half way. I had to know how it ended without cheating, so I read the whole thing.....
