More About the Author

Patrick McKeown was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and later studied under the auspices of the founder of the Buteyko Method; the late Dr Konstantin Buteyko.

From a very young age, Patrick suffered from asthma and relied on an array of medicines and inhalers until he discovered the Buteyko Method at the age of 26. By applying the principals from Dr Buteyko, Patrick experienced immediate relief from his asthmatic symptoms - a feat that over 20 years of medication had failed to accomplish. Learning to breathe through his nose and reducing his breathing volume positively changed his life in so many ways.

For the first time ever, Patrick's asthma was under control. This life-changing discovery motivated him to change his career in order to help children and adults who suffered from similar breathing problems.

Following his time in Russia in 2002, Patrick has been teaching the Buteyko Method in Australia, USA and throughout Europe. He has penned eight books, including three Amazon.com best sellers, and has been invited to speak at dental and respiratory conferences throughout the world.

In collaboration with the University of Limerick, Patrick was the instructor in a clinical study investigating the Buteyko Method as a treatment for rhinitis in asthma. As published in the leading rhinitis journal Otolaryngology, the results showed a 70% reduction of nasal symptoms in participants, including snoring, loss of smell, nasal congestion and difficulty breathing through the nose.

Patrick has been interviewed internationally for radio and television, including a recent interview with Dr Joseph Mercola, founder of the world's largest health website, Mercola.com. Patrick's message is simple; breathe through your nose in a calm, gentle and efficient manner. That's all that matters.

DVD sets include Buteyko Clinic set for adults, and ButeykoKids meet Dr Mew for children.

"Since Dr. Buteyko died, Patrick McKeown has established himself as one of the leading teachers of this breathing method."

Review

Say goodbye to your asthma with former chronic asthmatic Patrick McKeown’s highly effective programme, Asthma Free Naturally. -- Patrick Holford

From the Author

My name is Patrick McKeown. I was a chronic asthmatic for over twenty years until I learned how to address my breathing. I trained at the Buteyko Clinic of Moscow and am qualified by the Late Professor Buteyko.

For the past five years, I have helped thousands of persons suffering from asthma, emphysema, nasal complaints and other respiratory disorders through both my books and clinics asthmacare.ie/

This is my third book and it is the most user friendly to date. While writing it, I adopted the approach that books on health tend to be difficult reading with complicated information. I wanted Close Your Mouth to be the exact opposite. As a result, I stripped from the text what was not necessary in providing the reader with basic instruction that they can apply and make improvements to their health by themselves.

I can honestly say that correcting my breathing and applying simple lifestyle guidelines completely transformed my life. I have not had asthma symptoms, nor have I required medication for seven years.

It is unfortunate that the Asthma Society and most of the medical profession look at pharmaceutical intervention only. As long as they continue to do this, they will never solve the asthma problem but merely keep symptoms at bay.

If you have a health concern or just wish to feel better, then this book could be a tremendous aid in helping your recovery.

Wishing you the best of health,

Patrick McKeown

After reading his first book Asthma Free naturally, I decided to read this. The first book changed my life. This book contains the essence without all the detail. It summarises how one can apply Buteyko breathing without having to spend a large sum of money- the secret is exposed. Both books have changed my life and stopped my coughing which I had for close to three years. Overall, my health has improved dramatically. I now have my husband applying the program and his snoring has stopped, he no longer wakes up feeling fatigued and his energy levels are far higher. A simple but convincing read. Some of the points could be a little better explained but overall - a great little book.

I bought this book a few weeks ago for my other half. For the past four years he has suffered with the problem of excess mucus build up, causing him to have to cough and clear his throat continually..it had become so bad in the past year that this 'throat clearing exercise' could take place two or three times per minute. He had tried a variety of medical remedies and undergone consultations with 'specialists' who claimed to be able to cure the problem......all with absolutely no success.
After only 10 minutes of reading this book, he began to practise the breathing exercise and the result has been absolutely amazing. The coughing/throat clearing just stopped instantly !!!
Now, three weeks on, if he has the odd moment when he begins with the throat clearing again, he simply does the breathing exercise and has no further problem. I cant praise this author highly enough, he has 'cured' my other half and returned our household to peace and quiet. Thank You.....

I bought this book with great curisoity. It is creatively written and contains a wealth of information in easy to follow language. The book details Buteyko breathing as a method of reversing hyperventilation- I have had extreme anxiety and breathlessness and for the past five years had availed of a number of different treatments. Nobody told me to address my overbreathing. This book does in an easy to follow way. I think all persons young and old could benefit from such simple advice that we should be all doing.

How is it that something as simple as breathing could cause me to me tired almost continuosly. I could not understand it either until I read this little book and became aware of a Russian professor called Konstantin Buteyko. The author was an asthmatic who trained in Russia and the simplicity to which the exercises are explained makes the book so user friendly.
Since learning to breathe through my nose, watch my breathing during exercise, sleeping - my energy levels have improved greatly. So simple and so effective.

I found this book to be very helpful in getting a better understanding of why I have asthma and what to do about it. The advice was never explained to me before, despite having a number of hospitable admissions. Unblock your nose and nasal breathe only- the nose is a natural filter- it all makes sense. From a symptomatic point of view, my reliever medication has reduced from four puffs a day to none at all. It also helped to do a little research on the website [...]

I liked this book and got great benefit from it.

I liked this little book. It reminds me of a book that I have read by another author called Paul Ardin. Exercises are well explained and quite a few pages are devoted to illustrating why we breathe too much, how to measure it and how to fix it. In addition, diet and physical exercise is explained from the buteyko method perspective. I got a lot from this book. It is more a handbook which can be read in couple of hours. Overall- well explained, easy to follow and apply.

I don't suffer from asthma, however I do have some anxiety issues that rear their ugly head from time to time. So on a recent visit to an osteopath I was introduced to this concept and found it absolutely intriguing. She recommended this book to better explain the theory behind the techniques.

The book itself is concise but clearly written and we are left in no doubt about the authors conviction and expertise. The information supplied is aptly illustrated and relatively easy to follow. However my one query is, the book is marketed as a " Buteyko breathing self help manual " but in the book the author informs us that he has omitted some of the steps needed in " reduced breathing for adults " as it is essential they are practised under the direct supervision of a practitioner. Is this not a contradiction ? Should a self-help manual instruct us so that we can help ourselves ? Or is this designed to whet our appetite and cleverly steer us to the nearest practitioner ?

Overall I liked this book and the simplicity of this concept makes it accessible to all. But what about the missing steps ?
