Biography

Only Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson can rival Frank Sinatra for biggest-selling solo artist of all time. His jazz-influenced singing remained internationally renowned whatever whims, fashions or innovations were introduced by new generations. In a solo career that included over 70 albums and hundreds of singles, from the late-30s until the mid-90s, Sinatra remained universally loved even as ... Read more in Amazon's Frank Sinatra Store

This is not the album most people first think of when it comes to Sinatra's Capitol years, but nonetheless it is one of his very best recordings and features some of his most sensitive singing. The arrangements are once again by Nelson Riddle but the concept is slightly unusual in that it makes a feature of the Hollywood String Quartet, which lends a beautifully elegaic feeling to the arrangements and compliments Sinatra's unique, cello-like vocal timbre. The song selection can't be faulted, and includes some unusual picks like "I've Had My Moments" and "Love Locked Out", both 1930s rarities that should be better known. There are also standards like "Everything Happens To Me"(meat and drink for Sinatra's lovelorn persona) and "The End of A Love Affair", which is a truly great song associated with the supreme stylist Mabel Mercer. No ring-a-ding-ding swagger here then, just exquisite ballads delivered by the finest of singers at the height of his powers. Oddly, the album gained much less exposure than the other Capitol sets, but Sinatra was never better than on this occasion.

For many years this was my holy grail. It was almost impossible to find this CD seperate to an hugely expensive capitol "concepts" box set which I was not able to afford. I eventually had to set up a record player just to hear it on vinyl. Between this and the perversely elusive Tony Bennett Album "When Lights Are Low", you have two of the most intimate vocal records of all time. Close to You is possibly the most beautiful singing Sinatra ever recorded. It's the most sparse and vulnerable album he ever made. His voice is like some delicate flame. It burns into your soul and flickers there until the final violin has left the studio. To record all these beautiful ballads with a string quartet is inspired. It allows a nakedness to Sinatra's voice that leaves him no place to hide. And he has nothing to hide, because what you're left with is perfection. It's the only Sinatra I would need to have a second copy of just for back up. It would be too much to lose it.

This is a unique Sinatra presentation in that, although it features the orchestra and arrangements of Nelson Riddle, the orchestra is much more sparse and subdued than in most Sinatra & Riddle collaborations. This is partly to allow for a more intimate singing style by Sinatra and partly to give room for the Hollywood String Quartet led by Felix Slatkin to be heard. There are 12 tracks of `standards' here, though a couple of the tunes were new to me when I bought the LP in 1957: Harold Arlen and Truman Capote's `Don't like goodbyes', rescued from the unsuccessful Broadway musical House of Flowers; and Walter Donaldson's `I've had my moments', that Gus Kahn put lyrics to. The tracks were recorded the previous year. The atmosphere of the CD is therefore similar to Wee Small Hours, but quieter with less prominent orchestra; I was also reminded of Only The Lonely in mood. This is late night listening material in `lost-love' mode.

If there is an album of music that can be considered "classic" in the career of Frank, that album is this. Very good company with a string quartet, and some wind at the end, is a true delight. A masterpiece of good taste and a milestone in the career of Frank. The cover showing a euphoric Frank has nothing to do with the content rather pensive. Must have it.

Debe tenerlo.
