Image of Suzanne Vega

Widely regarded as one of the most brilliant songwriters of her generation, Suzanne Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s when, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, she sang what has been labeled contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Since the release of her self-titled, critically acclaimed 1985 debut ... Read more in Amazon's Suzanne Vega Store

5.0 out of 5 stars More than close-up -- intimate 23 Aug 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a collection of Suzanne Vega's love songs from her studio albums, rerecorded with little instrumentation beyond acoustic guitar. The production on most tracks is as intimate as the technology will allow, with an absolute minimum gizmo-ification to distract us from the singer. Even Marlene on the Wall, the stand-out pop hit from her first album, has had the production style cut right down, although this is more of a band number than the utterly close-up rendition of Gypsy just before it. But everything has been left in as much as possible, including the chair squeaking at the end of Marlene on the Wall, and a slightly warbly top note on Gypsy, which makes a nice contrast in these days of Auto-tune.

Overall, the pace of these songs is slower than on the early studio albums, and there is more space for expression, as Vega introduces pauses before some lyrics, as she did in some of the later albums. She has also developed a bit more huskiness, which makes this yet more human and personal.

Someone once said to me that Suzanne Vega's first album was the best, the second was the second best, the third was the third best, and so on. I don't necessarily agree with them, but it's certainly true that the production became progressively more complex with each of the first four albums, and stayed 'polished' on the rest. This album strips everything down to a simplicity which goes beyond the debut. Hearing all of these tracks from different periods with one minimalist style really does make me want to hear absolutely everything done in this way. I'm looking forward to the next three.

The outstanding guitar work on most of the tracks is Vega's own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is it really 25 years?? 25 Jun 2010
Format:Audio CD
In 1985 Suzanne vega`s debut album astounded many in the music business with her simple and very personal poetic songs which were brilliantly arranged and beautifully produced acoustic masterpieces, the album is still one of my favourites today.Althoug i have every studio album I must admit she had begun to disappear off my music radar until I heard her recently on Radio 2 `Radcliffe and Maconie` where she did 3 songs from the new `close up` series and promoted the current tour which resulted in me going to see her a couple of weeks ago in concert at salford. The new album is a selection of songs taken from her back catalogue re recorded in a more personal manner.Whilst the songs have a much leaner production with just gerry leonard on electic guitar and bass from her long time bass player michael visceglia who both do a good job of making the songs sound very intimate whilst compensating for the lack of a percussionist or keyboard, in fact many listeners probably wouldnt pick up on this so good is the overall effect.True this album aint going to feature in the album charts ( although solitude standing reached no.2 in 1987 )as it`s about the music rather than just selling records but to suzannes worldwide devoted fans they will be, like me delighted. 25 years after the first album it seems Suzanne is just as beautiful articulate , sensitive and energetic as ever and after seeing her live promoting this album she literally skipped off stage like a happy little girl.Buy it for them pensive moments....

5.0 out of 5 stars Musical Intelligence 22 Jun 2010
Format:Audio CD
I've seen Suzanne Vega close up in concert a couple of times, though not for a while. She is, I suppose, some way from fashionable these days. In fact, when I saw her last, in Budapest in the 90's , it seemed only artists with a slightly desperate air were touring that country. No doubt this is not the case today.

These songs, re-recorded, however, are full of confidence, intelligence and beauty. There doesn't seem a huge difference from the originals, but they have pared back, some, perhaps, unnecessary production, removed some clutter. Her voice sounds even better, matured, like the voices of Patti Smith or Rikki Lee Jones. She gets better with age (don't we all?).

The music doesn't sound dated and I was glad to have an excuse to listen to these lovely songs again. If you haven't heard any or many songs by Suzanne Vega this is not a bad place to start. She is a great artist and I look forward to seeing her in concert again sometime - Jazz Cafe maybe?

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant - among Suzanne Vega's best work 10 Oct 2012
Format:Audio CD
All four of these Close Up albums are really excellent. For me these stripped-down re-workings of her songs shed a new light on many of them and in a lot of cases I prefer them to the originals.

That haunting voice is still wonderful - a little huskier and more breathy perhaps which only adds to the atmosphere of the recording. The principal instrument is her acoustic guitar, played beautifully and often solo but augmented by delicate additions of things like organ and electric lead where appropriate. It takes really good material to shine with such minimal production, and these complex, often quirky songs show what very fine music and lyrics Vega has produced. The whole thing sounds intimate and personal (as was the intention), made more so by being quite close-miked and beautifully recorded. The four volumes are simply excellent throughout with great hits sounding original and fresh, and less well-known songs making you wonder why they are less well-known.

You almost certainly know Suzanne Vega's work if you are considering this, and are perhaps wondering whether you need new versions of songs you already own and love. I wondered the same thing but took a chance on this series and I'm delighted I did. I was worried it might be like those outtakes and demo versions which get added as bonus tracks to CDs and often aren't very good. These albums are nothing like that at all - they are a joy. I think they contain some of Suzanne Vega's best work, and I recommend all four volumes very warmly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mellow Suzanne
An acoustic version of a selection of Vega's love songs. Not all tracks benefit from the re-working but as I am a huge fan I love it, but for the most part I prefer the originals.

iThink!- This is how they should have been recorded in the first place. For the acoustic music lover these are a must have. Recommend all three volumes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, this was worth doing, Suzanne.
The voices of some singers definitely improve with the passage of time. Joni Mitchell is one, so was Sandy Denny. Suzanne Vega has shown it has happened to her too. Read more
