Close to Perfect 6 July 2009
Format:Audio CD
Beverley Craven's eagerly awaited fourth album does not disappoint. The ten tracks highlight Beverley's versatile talent for songwriting and can thrill you one moment and move you the next.

The first track, 'Rainbows' is a superb, uplifting track announcing Beverley's return with a resounding cheer. Track two, 'All Yours' would not be out of place on her third album, 'Mixed Emotions' and has a beautiful rhythmic beat.
'Without Me', track three, is a heartbreaking number layered with hope. Beverley is one of the few writers who can reach this level of emotion without reducing it to schmaltz.

The rest of the album continues to tell stories of sadness and joy. The absolute highlight is the penultimate number, 'Fun, Fun, Fun' which proves Ms Craven has a superbly wry sense of humour as the irony hits the ivories.

Although it has been a long wait, this album is one which remains in heavy rotation and I certainly hope there is a lot more to come.

Worth the wait 2 Oct 2009

Back with her trademark touches of wit and irony, still telling stories with that unique vocal style. Beverley Craven makes a great return to form with an album that grows on you each time you hear it (always the best sort). The voice seems to have a touch more vulnerability than it used to have and it works so well with these songs. The production matches the tracks perfectly and I look forward to more to come.

The wait for this fourth album has been far too long but it has certainly been worth it! Here is a collection of tracks that represent everything that is so good about Beverley Craven's music. As usual with this master musician, Beverley composes all the words and music and she has lost none of the magic that was self-evident in her earlier albums. The production is top rate and with quality musicians such as Felix Krish and Gary Sanctuary providing backup to Beverley's hauntingly beautiful voice, this album is a treat to the ears as well as the senses. Not for nothing has she sold more than 4 millions albums worldwide. All the tracks on this album sound good and then they really grow on you with the second and third listening. Of particular note is the first track "Rainbows" which is bright and lively yet carries a surprisingly profound message in the lyrics. But the third track, "Without Me" is arguably one the best that Beverley has ever written. As anybody who has been privileged enough to catch Beverley and her superb band during their current UK tour will have learned, this track was written at a very difficult time for her. Anyone who has the life experience of given parental love to a child will understand the poignancy of this lyric and to have carried this message off without recourse to excessive sentimentality is the mark of a true literary talent. We live in challenging times and there is a lot wrong with the world at this present juncture. Beverley Craven's beautiful words and music make this world a better place to live in.
