To quote the author:"Close reading aims to analyze in depth a short literary text - poem, prose extract or a passage from a play". The book takes the reader through many varied examples of all these forms, from Shakespeare and Donne, through Ibsen and Byron to John Updike and Seamus Heaney. The author is a linguist and knows how to use language, so the various forms of verse, figures of speech and the structuring of a work are explained in a scholarly but readable and unstuffy manner. This is an excellent and readable book for students or anyone interested in understanding how literature is crafted.
