Biography

You couldn’t invent the story of Nazareth if you tried. At their peak, the Dunfermline rock group were huge, selling vast quantities of albums and pulling in enormous crowds to their shows. By rights, when the group’s profile receded a little and they morphed into the highly respected club-level regulars that they are today, their reputation should have become tarnished – but ... 4.0 out of 5 stars a tale of two albums... 11 Sep 2011
By Mr Blackwell TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Having being spoilt with the previous 4 reissues from Salvo, its a bit of a disappointment that this is a 2 on 1 issue rather than stand alone releases, having said that ,it is 2 fantastic albums at a superb price,as with the previous reissues its a superb package/booklet with outstanding sound quality, with both albums sounding superior to previous reissues i've heard.

Close Enough For Rock n Roll (1976) **** Essentially a transitional disc straddling the rock era of the earlier albums with a hint to the future more polished sound. Opening with another bona fide Nazareth rock classic 'Telegram',an epic that always, for me, conjures up images from the opening of Zeppelins Song Remains The Same movie, the band being summoned to another tour,I've always wondered if Naz' used it as an inspiration?

The album is a mixture of rock/boogie and aor with notable highlights being 'Home sick Again','Vancouver Shakedown' and 'Carry Out Feelings',given that so many styles are encompassed by this album its a testament to the bands talent that they carry it off with conviction.

Play 'N' The Game (1976) **** It would be fair to say the transformation to AOR was more keenly felt on this disc than any of the other 70's releases but as with The Doobie Brothers/Fleetwood Mac Nazareth made it a smooth one, benefitting greatly from the remaster, the bass in particular bounces from the speakers. Highlights are plenty such as the opening one /two of 'Somebody To Roll' & 'Down Home Girl' the former with lashings of guitar while the latter litterally struts out of the speakers.

You want a beautiful, haunting ballad, then listen to 'Flying', bit of funk?

5.0 out of 5 stars great deal for two great discs 11 Oct 2010
By Michael Dobey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
These two discs followed the ultra classic 'hair of the dog' and they were both great example of prime hard rock and great ballads like 'carry out feelings'. For most fans these two are not as great as 'hair of the dog' or 'no mean city' and I agree with them. However you have some really great songs on here like the favorite hit 'telegram' , 'vancouver shakedown' and others. At this price you get great nazareth cds for the price of one. and the bonus b-side track is the same one on the single disc versions which are out of print basically. The single versions do have edited single versions of songs on both cd's but this is still a better deal. These cd's were solid nazareth albums and they did a great job of coming up with these tunes because in those days bands were abused they had to tour constantly and come up with music in the studio in the off time. Which this band did quite well and they were still at their peak here with great riffs and the typical loud and proud style of rock and roll.
This set is worth it for fans of great hard rock and you even get the cool version of joe tex's "I want to do everything for you' on 'play n the game'
So do yourself a favor if you are a fan of hard rock and 70's metal which at least was melodic and well played; grab this set.

I was very pleased to get this CD. I had been looking for this CD for a few years, and hadn't been able to locate it. It came when the vendor told me it would, it was in great condition (New). I would definitely buy from this vendor again.
