Book Description

Clojure is a practical, general-purpose language that offers expressivity rivaling other dynamic languages like Ruby and Python, while seamlessly taking advantage of Java libraries, services, and all of the resources of the JVM ecosystem. This book helps you learn the fundamentals of Clojure with examples relating it to the languages you know already, in the domains and topics you work with every day. See how this JVM language can help eliminate unnecessary complexity from your programming practice and open up new options for solving the most challenging problems.

Clojure Programming demonstrates the language’s flexibility by showing how it can be used for common tasks like web programming and working with databases, up through more demanding applications that require safe, effective concurrency and parallelism, data analysis, and more. This in-depth look helps tie together the full Clojure development experience, from how to organize your project and an introduction to Clojure build tooling, to a tutorial on how to make the most of Clojure’s REPL during development, and how to deploy your finished application in a cloud environment.

  • Learn how to use Clojure while leveraging your investment in the Java platform
  • Understand the advantages of Clojure as an efficient Lisp for the JVM
  • See how Clojure is used today in several practical domains
  • Discover how Clojure eliminates the need for many verbose and complicated design patterns
  • Deploy large or small web applications to the cloud with Clojure

4.0 out of 5 stars Recommended for the Clojure newbie 20 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
There are a number of Clojure books but I think this is the only one worth buying, simply because it includes some useful code examples to illustrate the Clojure idiom and to compare it with idiomatic Java. (In contrast, the second best Clojure book, The Joy of Clojure is (almost?) entirely narrative and very little if any useful illustrative code).

However, Clojure is very much still leading edge and so you should expect to have to engage with the community in order to learn- you won't get enough out of any of the current crop of Clojure books but I think it is well worth the effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars By far the the best 21 Aug. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read a couple of Clojure books, and I think this is the best so far. In many cases (take concurrency as an example) this book has the most thorough explanation - it helped me grasp a lot of the hardcore concepts. Definitely should be on your shelf if you're serious about Clojure.

Clojure isn't exactly easy if you have an OO mindset and this book covers all the concepts and has good examples to help you along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, get it now, you won't find better 16 Sept. 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm only 50% through this book so far, and I have to say this is the most comprehensive book on clojure I've found to date. The authors clearly grok the subject. If you're intentions are to dabble with the language for a week and never touch it again (very unlikely - you'll be hooked if you're not already) then this may not be the right book for you. On the other hand, if becoming a clojure ninja is the aim, I wouldn't pick any other volumes than this very one. This book will suit both beginners and already versed clojure developers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, could have been better 21 Nov. 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book will do the job of teaching you clojure, but unless

1. You already know Ruby or Python

2. Are an idiot who can only understand other languages by prolonged comparisons with those two languages

..then you will find yourself doing a fair amount of skimming. When the authors stop wasting time this way and trust to the intelligence of the reader, the book improves considerably. (And really, how did the idiots they imagine they are writing for learn Ruby or whatever in the first place?) Unfortunately, the unnecessary cruft gets in the way of reading. 4 stars is slightly too kind for the book, but 3 would have been much too mean.
