Format: Unknown Binding
"No But I Have A Dark Brown Overcoat" (boom boom! lol). This true and interesting account of the intrigues of a relatively successful (uncaught throughout WW2!) agent/officer of the French Section of Special Operations Executive reads well, if, at times, a bit like a deadly serious version of "Allo Allo?". Its weakness, like so many of these accounts published in the 1950's, is that the author seems to sincerely believe that the only true Frenchmen were those who were in the Resistance (preferably Gaullists or monarchists rather than Communists). The rest, which more erudite people now know to have been about 99% of the population (at least until 1944 and a definitely likely Allied victory) are either fuddy-duddies (supporters of Vichy France), fools (most of the non-Resistants), corrupt schemers or outright traitors. His views are very narrow indeed. Still, this is a book worth reading for its true-life stories.
