5.0 out of 5 stars Mouth-watering 9 May 2011
Format:Hardcover
As a very keen cookbook collector, I feel the need to rate this delectable book, as I am amazed no-one has done so already. I bought it about 3 months ago, and read it from cover to cover, utterly delighted about the variety of the recipes. They are full of anecdotes, and with the assurance of a couple who are making a killing in their New York bakery, you feel they know their stuff. Lots of imagination, and a huge amount of recipes I am dying to try (in fact, I have just treated myself to a food mixer, so I can tackle them). Please consider this fabulous book, as you won't be disappointed.

I first heard of the Clinton St Baking Co as it is featured in every tourist guide book to New York and has won awards for its pancakes. Whilst on holidat we managed to stop in mid-week for breakfast, having heard about the hour+ long queues at weekends for brunch. We each had a stack of pancakes and a banana chocolate chunk muffin to share and were immeditely hooked. So upon our return to rainy London, we were thrilled to find that they were planning to release a cook book which we pre-ordered immediately. The book contains recipes for all the meals that Clinton St Baking Co is renowned for - their pancakes with maple butter, American muffins, biscuits (not like what the English would call a biscuit, but more like a scone but not quite), home made preserves as well as savoury items like southern fried chicken, fried green tomatoes etc.
I have made the pancakes (both blueberry and banana walnut)with maple butter at home and although not quite as good as in the restaurant (probably due to my cooking rather than the recipe) we all agreed they were pretty darn good.
I haven't tried too many other recipes, although I did try the banana chocolate chunk muffin receipe and think a couple of the instructions were inaccurate, such as the size of the banana chunks, which I halved and we still too big. Still, nothing that you can't work out with a little trial and error, but this is the reason for the 4 rather than 5 rating.
It's a great cafe and a great book. It was my first "American" cookbook and I certainly enjoyed it as an introduction to American cooking and hope to make many other recipes from it. The pictures are great, so it's enjoyable to just leaf through, and there are lots of professional hints and tips too.
I was a little disappointed to see that they didn't include a recipe for their strawberry cake, which includes a middle layer of sponge made with strawberries to achieve a deep red colour, but that was just because I had seen it in the shop but decided against a slice for breakfast. Maybe they'll save that for volume 2...

5.0 out of 5 stars BookHounds [...] 20 Nov 2010

See those pancakes on the cover? I made those! They turned out just as beautifully. A word of warning though, I would cut this recipe in half unless you have a football team lurking around. I used all of the batter and froze the remaining pancakes. One minute in the microwave and they tasted almost better than the fresh made ones. I have read about other cooks doing this with pancakes, but never tried it myself. I put them in zip lock bags with wax paper in between. Now whenever I want pancakes, I just put a couple in the microwave for about 45 seconds. My son is still talking about how good the maple butter was and it was quite simple to make. I also put aside some of that in the refrigerator for use later.

The recipes are all really good and I am working my way through the book. I found that they were quite easy to follow. All of the direction are clear and concise. The ingredients are easy to find, so no worries there like some other cookbooks. This is definitely a keeper for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just another cookbook 13 Nov 2010

This is a terrific cookbook. I have a large collection of cookbooks, but this one is my new favorite. The variety of recipes is wonderful...........the pictures are gorgeous and the directions are clear and easy to follow. The restaurant tips make you undderstand that sometimes it is the little tricks you learn that make all the difference.
If you have ever been to the restaurant (Clinton Street Baking Company) and had the pancakes, the biscuits, the fried chicken, the eggs Benedict etc......... the book will be well worth it so that you can make these recipes at home.
A perfect gift for any cook you know.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll want to add this one to your collection... 3 Nov 2010

My cookbook stash is really too low. I don't even have a basic Betty Crocker cookbook, how sad is that? And I'm not really the best at picking out new cookbooks to add to my shelf... or I wasn't until the Clinton St. Baking Company Cookbook set the bar high for me. This very nice, hardcover book with glossy pages is full of everyday breakfast, brunch, and anytime recipes - basics like biscuits, buttermilk fried chicken, and split pea soup, and specialty dishes like baked truffled grits or coconut lemon curd cake. It's full of color photos, hints and tips, and step-by-step instructions that even I can't mess up. ;-)

So far my favorite recipe is the Blueberry Crumb Muffins. I made a batch of them one day and the next they were gone. And oh my word, SO good! They truly were the best muffins I have ever made, and were easy enough that I'll never feel that I need to go with a box mix again. In fact, just saying (or typing) "box mix" makes me feel like I'm cheating on these delicious muffins. YUM!
