Try ONLY if you're a fan already - a mixed bag that's just worth the price, 26 Aug 2009
This review is from: The Clint Eastwood Collection Volume 1 : Where Eagles Dare / City Heat / Heartbreak Ridge / Pink Cadillac / White Hunter, Black Heart (5 Disc Box Set) [DVD] (DVD)
Hmm . . . this collection (or assortment rather) certainly is mixed. I'm not even sure how or why these five films were selected to be put together in the first place, as they certainly don't resemble each other at all. Also none of them rate as either classic films or Eastwood's most popular work (unless you're a very big fan of Where Eagles Dare, which I'm not personally). However, it has a few plus points for me:
1. White Hunter Black Heart is almost impossible to find on Region 2 DVD - I tried finding it as a separate DVD and didn't get anywhere. So I'm very glad I found it on this set because I watched it last week and it did so much for me. A few scenes have some terrific and highly memorable dialogue which can make it a worthwhile watch. The end image is beautiful too. It may not be the most perfect film, due to occasional patchy editing and a few daft lines here and there, but I recommend it highly. Stick with it because although Eastwood is slightly wooden and unconvincing at first his performance gets better in the last half.
2. Heartbreak Ridge is the funniest latently gay movie ever made, next to Top Gun. But seriously, Eastwood's performance is great.
3. Hey, what can I say, I like Clint Eastwood. So this buy was perfect!
Some down points:
1. Pink Cadillac is just BAD. I watched the first three quarters before realising I couldn't care less how it finished and switched off. Don't watch.
2. You don't get individual DVD cases for these discs, it has one of those fussy foldout designs. A bit annoying but no big deal I guess.
3. No classics here, so don't buy this if you've never watched Eastwood films before and want to see him at his best. There are plenty of other wonderful collections to try before you get to this one. If you've watched all his classics already (well known or not well known) and want to go further, this is ok.
Overall it's a bag of oddities, but if you're a diehard Clint fan who has seen almost everything Eastwoodian by now and you crave more, this is for you.

The Clint Eastwood Collection Vol 1, 27 May 2006
This review is from: The Clint Eastwood Collection Volume 1 : Where Eagles Dare / City Heat / Heartbreak Ridge / Pink Cadillac / White Hunter, Black Heart (5 Disc Box Set) [DVD] (DVD)
'Where Eagles Dare', 'City Heat', 'Heatbreak Ridge', 'Pink Cadillac', 'White Hunter, Black Heart'
I wrote up reviews of each disc but they all came out the same, their arn't any duff discs bundled in.
Presentation:
Short Warner Logo (9 seconds) followed by a static functional menu **** (I'm not a fan of elaborate menus)
Picture:
Decent transfers from a decent prints, although a little grainy and soft(more so on the older films), progressive anamorphic 25fps ****
Sound:
The DD 5.1 Remix tracks are authentic sounding enough, although including the original mono/stereo tracks would be nice but in this case not essential. ****
Extras:
Anamorphic Theatrical Trailers for all films and a Promotional 12 minute Featurette for Where Eagles Dare. **
Overall:
A very decent set of 5 films all uncut with new transfers in their correct apect ratios and progressive with 5.1 soundtracks in a digipack case with poster artwork behind and on the discs and the credits printed on the underside of the lid.

Excellent Collection, 11 Jun 2008
This review is from: The Clint Eastwood Collection Volume 1 : Where Eagles Dare / City Heat / Heartbreak Ridge / Pink Cadillac / White Hunter, Black Heart (5 Disc Box Set) [DVD] (DVD)
I bought this for less than £10 delivered and so I'm judging it by that price.
The box opens like a book then folds out to reveal the discs. A nice package.
The films are all in nice clean Widescreen prints. The only one with any extras is WHERE EAGLES DARE, which has a 15 minute long behind the scenes.
Definitely well worth the price I paid for it.
