Review

An invaluable guide to clinical skills for OSCEs ... A must have for all students. --The International Journal of Clinical Skills

This excellent book on clinical skills for OSCEs is concise, informative, and comprehensive. I have no doubt whatsoever that anyone who has mastered its content will sail through the final OSCE and indeed enjoy the experience. --Professor Sir Cyril Chantler

Ecclesiastes' comment that 'Of making many books there is no end and much study is a weariness of the flesh' is as true as ever, but this book is so brilliant and useful that it is well worth all the hard work that went into its production. --Professor Lord McColl

This book is very well laid out and helpful for all clinical exams. The text is clear and concise and the DVD helps to put it all together by watching doctors carry out histories and exams.

I would recommend it to any medical student preparing for OSCEs or other clinical exams. One thing I would mention though is that your medical school may require you to carry out examinations slightly different to the text; so be careful and check your own mark schemes!

If your serious about passing the PLAB 2 OSCE first time and you also want to make sure you're genuinely going to be a 'SAFE' and competent Doctor when your "Mugging" up stations then this book and it's marking guide is essential and it has no equal for PLAB 2 preparation.

In preparation for the UK GMC PLAB 2 exams I attended a 12 day course in london and purchased other PLAB 2 books. One of the Cuban Doctors at the preparation course put me onto the Neel Burton, Clinical Skills for OSCE with it's free marking scheme all with 5-6 min stations as per the PLAB 2 now held in the GMC offices in Manchester.

My wife a UK Doctor bought this for me while I was at the course and when I returned I literally threw away all my course notes and started practicing the stations with the marking schemes immediately.

If you're Pakistani, Indian, Nigerian or Russian like the Doctors I studied with and you feel worried about your communication skills and English isn't your first language then you will gain a lot of confidence from knowing your studying and practicing the right material and you'll be more flexible in the actual PLAB 2 exam which does throw small changes to past exams at you in each station. Other than Diabetic/Alcoholic foot which comes every time!!

When I attended the Manchester PLAB 2 OSCE in March I was much better prepared than any other resource or course could have prepared me. I set up my own practice Mock stations and simulated a 17 station exam, a weeks prior to the real exam, which was very easy using the marking scheme with it's 1 -2 line clinical scenarios. You need to practice, practice, practice especially 'Histories and Counseling' there isn't any short cuts, but it helps if you have accurate guidance.

Passing PLAB 2 the first time was crucial to me, and it has been a long time since I graduated or was an intern/FY1.

I highly recommend this text and marking scheme for PLAB 2 preparation, it made all the difference in my preparation.

I hope that Dr Neel Buton will considers PLAB candidates in his future editions.

Perfect for OSCEs 22 Jun 2011
By LJM87
Format:Paperback
After six years at medical school I have become very accustomed to having at least five or six books piled on my desk for each topic. It is very hard to find a book that covers everything you need to know. Clinical Skills for OSCEs is the first book that I have come across where I can finally clear my desk and have one book in front of me. Such a joy! The book cleverly covers everything in a clear and succinct manner. It is a very rare find to have a book that you can rely on to provide you with a concise yet thorough approach to medicine and surgical clinical skills.

The book also comes with a superb DVD of clinical examinations. Before discovering this book and DVD I had been using youtube for clincal examination videos. However it is often very hard to distinguish between trust worthy videos and complete rubbish, this wastes a lot of time. It is fantastic to have a collection of videos that have continuity in the approach to the patient and at a very high standard. Not only is the DVD scholarly and informative but it also makes for a very welcome break from book work.

This is a must have guide to OSCEs in the run up to finals and indeed throughout the whole of medical school. I wish that I had found the book earlier so that I had a book to accompany me from the very beginning. I highly recommend starting preparing early for OSCEs and this makes the perfect guide.
