Book Description

31 July 2008 1593856997 978-1593856991 3

Widely regarded as the standard reference in the field, this book, now in its third edition, provides essential tools for understanding and assessing malingering and other response styles in forensic and clinical contexts. An integrating theme for the substantially expanded third edition is the systematic application of detection strategies as conceptually grounded, empirically validated methods that bridge different measures and populations. From leading practitioners and researchers, the volume presents major theoretical, empirical, and clinical advances. Coverage of multiscale inventories and feigned cognitive impairment has been doubled, and new chapter topics include feigned medical presentations, factitious disorders, and forensic evaluations.

Review

"Clearly written and substantially updated by a stellar cast of contributors, the volume is packed with diagnostic clues to a broad range of feigned conditions and guidelines for conducting definitive research. I recommend this extraordinarily useful book as a constant companion for anyone involved in practicing or studying the assessment of impression management." - Irving B. Weiner, University of South Florida; President (2008), Society of Clinical Psychology, USA

"Clinical Assessment of Malingering and Deception, Third Edition, will serve as the authoritative work on response style for years to come. The assessment of feigning is the cornerstone of any forensic mental health evaluation. This book is a 'must' for all forensic mental health professionals, and doubtless will be frequently consulted for the most up-to-date information on research and practice."
 - Alan M. Goldstein, PhD, ABPP, ABFP, Professor Emeritus, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York

"This eagerly awaited third edition is more than just an update. Coverage encompasses the fabrication of symptoms by civil litigants, feigned psychosis on the part of criminal defendants, the minimizing of negative personality characteristics by law enforcement applicants, and many other topics. Continuing the tradition of prior editions, the volume emphasizes a scientific approach to the evaluation of malingering and deception. This is a 'must have' resource for psychologists and other practitioners who work in forensic settings. General clinicians, particularly those involved in interviewing and assessment, also will find it a very useful reference." - Glenn J. Larrabee, independent practice, Sarasota, Florida, USA

"This is the foremost text on malingering. I have used it in the classroom and in practice for over 10 years. Each subsequent edition is updated with the latest research by noted authors in the field." - Richard P. Conti, Department of Psychology, College of Saint Elizabeth, Morristown, New Jersey, USA

"This edited book, which consists of 24 chapters by experts in the field, is in its third edition. It demonstrates the remarkable expansion in the field of malingering and other forms of deception since its first edition in 1988. Major advances have taken place in the development of detection strategies, which include the use of multiple measures rather than relying on a single test, and their solid conceptual foundation and empirical validation... A huge strength of the book is the exceptional breadth of relevant subject matter, the appropriate detail and comprehensiveness of each chapter and their consistently good quality." - Gisli Gudjonsson, Institute of Psychiatry, British Journal of Psychiatry, 195, 2009

4.0 out of 5 stars Valuable information--use this BEFORE you conclude! 18 Aug 2008
By Christopher Herron - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This scholarly work is rich in study findings, discussion of past methods of screening for various types of malingering and is a good collection of some more obscure research. My only criticism is, that at times, it is a little difficult to read due to the long, in-text referencing. Footnotes would have been a better format. A 'Must Have' for any clinicial who might be called into the courtroom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-Have Book for Forensic Mental Health Professionals 16 Dec 2011

Dr. Rogers has once again compiled a superb collection of scholarly articles on diverse areas of malingering assessment. I literally have referred to this text dozens of times since I purchased it. It was a major source of information for a paper I recently wrote that concerned, in part, assessment of dissimulation in forensic disability evaluations. I also recently read the chapter, Assessment of Recovered and False Memories, which helped me better understand a complex, challenging case. Rogers' introductory chapters will provide you with a sophisticated understanding of the principles, assessment approaches, and research strategies related to detecting significant exaggeration and feigning of mental disorders (in addition to similar information on the detection of defensiveness or under-reporting). I highly recommend this essential reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars WARNING: THE KINDLE EDITION IS NOT THE 3RD EDITION. 15 July 2013
By William W. Wood - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is clearly the definitive text for anyone interested in this particular topic. However, BE WARNED: THE KINDLE EDITION THAT IS ADVERTISED ON THIS WEB PAGE IS NOT THE 3RD EDITION PICTURED HERE; IT IS THE SECOND AND NOW OUT OF DATE EDITION. Oh well, LOL!! Talk about irony!! If you want the 3rd edition, you have to buy it, since it is NOT yet available on Kindle. Caveat emptor!
