I do not understand the previous reviewer's comments; it seems to be about a different book. This is a later, paperback edition of the first volume of John Mortimer's autobiography, not a biography. I had previously reviewed the hardcover edition which I repeat below; although I have not read this edition, as it is only a new paperback,I doubt it will have changed much.
PREVIOUS REVIEW - Like many, I came to Mortimer through Rumpole; my interest in the law, its characters and the law as represented in fiction, lead me naturally through Henry Cecil to Mortimer. I read all the Rumpoles and watched the series. He was a great entertainer and thought-provoker with a wealth of experience in the courts of the south of England from the lowliest to the highest. I was fortunate to hear his one-man tour shortly before he died.
I discovered this book in a friend's Spanish villa and read it from beginning to end in one sitting through the night. It wasn't the "boredom" of Spain which kept me up but the fascination and enjoyment of Mortimer. I laughed out loud, I cried freely and I finished a wiser, happier man, feeling much closer to the Mortimer family.
The title is a joke he quotes in the preface; at a tedious cocktail party with the plum-in-the-mouth sort of chap that seems to inhabit them, he was given advice in the event of a yachting accident - "cling to the wreckage, always cling to the wreckage". Mortimer's quip was succinct and simple - he had been doing that all his life!
Read it - highly recommended.
