Book Description

19 Aug 2005
Being depressed often leaves you feeling paralysed into inaction. Climbing back out of the pit of gloom seems almost impossible. You need help, and that is what this book offers - practical, humane and spiritual help. Since its first publication in 1993, Climbing Out of Depression has become widely recognised as one of the best books to help in the darkness of depression. What makes the book distinctive is the fact that the author herself has suffered from depression for many years. She does not write as an expert, or as a depression counsellor, but as someone who knows the feelings from close personal experience. As a result her book contains a varied menu of hints, quotations and illustrations, not page after page of unbroken text. The new edition of this tried and tested book incorporates revision reflecting the author's changed understandings of depression, and fresh material on subjects such as coping strategies and forgiveness. Climbing out of Depression is perfect to dip into as it fits your mood and the need of the moment, making it a dependable guide to the climb.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gentle, Hopeful, Reassuring Book 6 July 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I have just bought my second copy of this lovely book, and I was glad to find it in hardback because my paperback copy fell apart! That's hardly surprising since it has been so, so valuable to me throughout my struggle with depression. This is the only book I have read with such a gentle approach. The author's long experience with depression is evident and while her advice for action is excellent, she also clearly understands that on some days, any action is impossible. For such awful times she discusses the concept of retreating to a safe place until you feel stronger without ever suggesting that this need to hide from the world is a weakness. She covers many other aspects of depression in a simple and approachable way that an exhausted sufferer can accept. I cannot recommend this book too highly.

I've suffered from bi-polar illness for over 20 years. This is the first book I've come across that is helpful, witty, in an easy to read format, doesn't talk down to you, doesn't tell you to 'snap out of it'.

The layout is ideal for a sufferer- no huge chunks of text to put you off when concentration is difficult. And yet what is written is helpful, indepth in places- not just cliches and platitudes. The text is broken up with quotations and helpful snippets that make browsing and skimming through just as rewarding as sitting down to read it front-to-back.

The cartoons of the lemming gradually climbing up the cliff were a nice, original touch. The author approaches the subject as one to be taken seriously, but at the same time inserts a little humour- usually at the expense of those who annoy us when we're depressed. Ha!

Brilliant.
Buy it if you're a sufferer. Treat youself. You'll love it.
Buy it for a friend who is a sufferer. They'll love you for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent: The best book I've found so far. 25 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Hi, If any of you are thinking about buying a book to help you cope with a depressive illness then I would recommend this one. I bought this about 4 weeks ago & I'm still not finished it as its the type of book that you just pick up when you want a little extra help & support to get through the various things depression can throw at you during a day.

The book is wrote in simple English & does not try to overload you with technobable & medical terminology. To me, this is why I love it. Also I find that the author has gone through everything I've gone through & worse so I find she knows what she is talking about. This compares to so many books I've read which delve in psychological, biological, social, genetic & other factors that have caused depression wrote by some PHD who has never gone through any of it but think they've figured it out.

This is what it claims to be, "A Practical Guide for Sufferers".

If you suffer from depression it may well help you get started on the road to recovery, if you know somoeone who suffers read it - it will help you to help them and in turn they can help themselves. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This si one of the best books on depression I have ever read, and it has a permanent place on my bedside table. It is gentle and comforting, and very easy to read - either all in one sitting, or to dip into as you need to.

I really can't recommend this enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book! 22 May 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is a very helpful book. It has some excellent tips and will benefit almost every individual who suffers from depression. Another book that I found very helpful, although it is apparently controversial, it has helped a lot of people as it addresses the source of the depression problem, and I highly recommend it is Dietmar Scherf's "I LOVE ME: Avoiding & Overcoming Depression".

5.0 out of 5 stars At last the words that I dont have! 15 May 2007
Format:Paperback
This book arrived yesterday, and is just the best. It is easy to read, and I love colouring in the lemmings at the beginning of each chapter. At last the words that I dont have, and the things that I find hard to explain are here in this book. I suffered with depression about 15 years ago when my mother died, and hoped I would never return. However unfortunately due to a recent bereavement, pressure at work, a sister planning a wedding, and passing ships in the night with my husband who is working some awkward shift patterns... I am back there again. Unlike the Beat Depression and Reclaim Your Life book, I can seriously recommend this book.
