Climate and Christ - A Prophetic Alternative
by Edward P. Echlin, Columbia Press, 2010, 134 pp., ISBN 978-1-85607-690-6, $15.95 (paper).
This well-researched, eloquently written discussion by a Christian eco-theologian, of climate change and the wisdom of integrating science and faith to counter the environmental ravages of deforestation, habitat destruction and overpopulation, is a "meeting of the minds" in which the author quotes many of the world's greatest theologians and scientists from Teilhard de Chardin to Charles Darwin, from Rachel Carson to Pope John Paul II.
An avid gardener, Echlin notes with a sense of forbidding the changes occurring in his English garden, including his planting and harvesting schedules, the disappearance of familiar wildlife, early and late blooming flora, and unpredictable rainfall, all of which he sees as harbingers of future food, water and political insecurity.
Echlin discusses the role of evolution in Christian theology, the principles of positive and negative feedback, his Proximity Principle which encourages living sustainably locally, and his In-depth Principle which discourages carbon consuming air travel and encourages learning about one's own "bioregion". He touches upon the "dirty little secret" of food waste, and the corporate takeover of food production. He reiterates the need for sustainable energy, and the environmentalist mantras of "Reduce, reuse, recycle," and "Live simply that others might simply live." He advocates imitating Christ's simple agrarian lifestyle (the prophetic alternative), and calling upon the Christian virtues of faith, hope, and love to heal our embattled planet.
Many of Echlin's suggestions are familiar ones. The "grow your own" movement is an echo of 1960's counterculture. What is different about this book, is that it proposes a faith-centered, in addition to a scientific solution to the problems of global warming.
A must-read for all who seek to understand and reverse the negative effects of climate change, from a faith-centered perspective, through individual and community action.
