This concert was the best I've ever been to and this is an amazing dvd. The tracklist is ideal as Cliff is singing from his own (brilliant, stunning, incredibly underrated) back catalogue instead of paying endless tributes to everyone else. I don't love Chuck Berry, don't love Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis or Bill Haley, I love Cliff! I love all the dvds so much but never realized how much better it would be to have virtually all his own stuff. He sings rousing live versions of the sumptuous "Give Me Love Your Way", the romantic "Hey Mr Dream Maker", the vibrant My Kinda Life", the showstopping "Ocean Deep", the breathtaking "Peace In Our Time". Tracks from his new duets album are also included, for which his excellent backing vocalists replace the famous names as Cliff "can't afford them" but these singers too are incredibly gifted, especially Dawn Joseph who really has the voice to become the next Alicia Keys or Mary J Blige. Cliff's voice is amazing, I'll swear he's been training it, well it's always been gorgeous but he uses so much more vibrato than he used to, and he has this crystalline, pure vocal tone that bowls you over with its sheer beauty. He injects every nuance of emotion there could be into his singing, this is especially evident on the 9 tracks from his last solo album "Something's Goin On" which I would consider his best ever. If you love SGO this is the dvd for you...live versions of all the songs left off Cliff's Leeds Castle concert are on here, bar one. "How Did She Get Here" is rousing, dark, mysterious, soulful while "I Will Not Be A Mistake" is luscious and spine-tingling. He really, really knows how to use his voice and sounds even better live than he does on record, more powerful and if it's possible even more soulful. And then "For Life", perhaps Cliff's best ever ballad, is here in its full glory. Every note is caressed and sheer joy is evoked. "Field Of Love" is a huge standout too. darker, deeper, rockier, sultrier and thus even better than on the record. Haunting voice. On "Simplicity" his voice is layered with feeling and sensuality.
Two further highlights are the two sides of his new single, "Move It", a reworking of his first hit, with a harder, rock edge and much more passion than the original; and another the Christmas song "21st Century Christmas". It's a potential Christmas classic, combines traditional with modern and I just wish people weren't so cynical and critics not so horrible about Christmas songs, especially his. The sound was flawless at this concert and the lighting, choreography and staging were brilliantly crafted, the stage looks amazing. (I also saw Christina Aguilera live this year and Cliff, 41 years Christina's senior, moved and cavorted about the stage as much as she did. Very impressive.)Everything down to the concert outfits and the dancers' costumes were perfect. Thank you, Cliff!
