Book Description

Glorious short stories from Alexander McCall Smith as part of the Galaxy Quick Reads initiative.

Product Description

There are times when ladies must use all their wisdom and good sense to face life's problems and mysteries. Mma Ramotswe, owner of the No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency, keeps her wits about her as she looks into why the country's star goalkeeper isn't saving goals. Georgina turns her rudeness into a virtue when she opens a successful hotel. Italian shop-keeper Fabrizia shows her bravery when her husband betrays her. And in Suffolk during the Second World War, gentle La proves that music really can make a difference.

With his trademark gift for storytelling, international bestselling author Alexander McCall Smith brings us five tales of love, heartbreak, hope and the cleverness of ladies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good stories 18 Feb 2012
By Mikhail
Format:Paperback
I liked all the stories in this book. First, a fascinating start for stories that turned out not to be only hilarious, but in a curious way, insightful and educative. It comes on the hills of The Usurper: and Other Stories, which is another story I enjoyed with similar settings. The prose is smooth flowing, and the plots come with suspense and surprises

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable stories 21 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback
I bought this under the impression it was another No 1 Ladies Detective book, however, it is a collection of stories involving women from different countries. Apart from that it was fairly enjoyable for light reading, good for holidays though quite short, I read the whole book in an hour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining short stories 27 Oct 2012
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This little book is an entertaining collection of stories each of which can be read at a sitting. The title story features Precious Ramotswe - the proprietor of the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency in Botswana - but the other stories in the collection feature other ladies. The last story in the collection is about La who also appears in the full length book La's Orchestra.

I enjoyed all the stories and they demonstrate the author's excellent understanding of human nature and the way people behave. If you haven't read any of Alexander McCall's work before then this might be a good place to start as it will give you a flavour of his writing.

2.0 out of 5 stars La's orchestra reprised 10 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The last half of the book is a shortened version of 'La's Orchestra Saves the World which is a great book - I recommend you read the full version though. The other short stories I could take or leave.

4.0 out of 5 stars incredibly quick read 28 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
this contains 5 new stories including 1 from the ladies detective agency and one from La's Orchestra. they are short and in quite a large font so ideal for the reluctant reader or perhaps someone with failing sight! the stories are the usual AMC and at this price you can't really go wrong. Good for taking to a waiting room, perhaps ( and leaving it there!)

3.0 out of 5 stars Some better than others 15 Feb 2012
By C. Colley TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This is a collection of five short stories, including one involving the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency. Most of the stories were okay, but I lost interest in the last story in the book. I would say that is typical of a short story collection. Some stories tend to be better than others and enjoyment of them can often be limited.

Another story with a moral from an unlikely setting. As ever I enjoy the characters and the humour as well as the particular tale.

McCall smith never disappoints. The characters are consistent and as delightful as always. Sage advice from unpretentious ladies (maybe not Ma Makutse).
