Enchanted as the author was with 'Freddie' the young fox and his family, John set out to recount the games and antics that he and his fellow gardeners witnessed, whilst also developing characters and story lines. Raphelina Bonito's perfect illustrations then brought the whole lot alive. One of my great joys in recent years has been the opportunity to read stories to my grandchildren and, as the older ones have gone through their early school years, to help them as they have learned to read for themselves. There is nothing like a good, well-illustrated story to capture interest and to round off a busy day.
Another pleasure of semi-retirement is that I have time to grow vegetables and fruit at an allotment. It was there that I met Freddie. His cleverness, his mischief and his relationship with people were extraordinary. As each magical event actually happened, I could see the basis for a story and its title.
I hope you will enjoy reading the stories which have been wonderfully illustrated by Raphelina Bonito. Following each story, there is a gardening tip and a recipe, relevant to the fruit and vegetables mentioned in the text, for you to try.

What a find! Not only are these stories charming, funny and engaging but the box packaging and illustrations are utterly delightful,and sadly, not much found these days. A great read to share with children.
