Two wheels from Embankment to Egypt

Product Description

It was a blustery April morning on the Thames Embankment in London when Anne Mustoe set out on a phenomenal lone cycle ride - to the original site of Cleopatra's Needle at Heliopolis in Egypt.

Leaving behind home comforts, she set herself the challenge of travelling close to water wherever possible - via the Seine and the Rhone, then alongside the Burgundy canal, the Po and the Venetian Lagoon. Before she would reach her final waterway - the evocative Nile - Ms Mustoe would encounter the dusty yet beguiling Near East: Turkey, Syria, the Lebanon and finally Egypt itself.

Anne Mustoe weaves a story of exquisite detail laced with the understated humour that has become her hallmark.

Brave lady on a bike 29 Jan 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
All my fantasies about cycling round the world have been brought rudely down to earth by Ann Mustoe's books and this latest one is no exception - she's doing it all so that I don't have to. This time she is pursued by dreadful weather nearly all the way - I would have given up by Paris. I do admire her openness to the people she meets on her travels, whether friendly, hostile or just curious. I also admire her linguistic abilities - she learned Mandarin Chinese to prepare herself for an earlier journey, and in this book manages basic Turkish and is disappointed that her modern Greek is not up to scratch. In this book she travels near water across Europe and the Middle East in the footsteps of Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar and Cleopatra, and by the end you feel these people lived only a few years ago, not more than two thousand.

Only the 2nd review on this book here and long overdue on my part. Anne Mustoe passed away on November 10th in Syria whilst on her latest and ultimately ,final bike cycling adventure. I, for one must sing anne's praises here as I found all of her books VERY informative. Especially from a historical standpoint as I am pretty ignorant as to the way our modern world was shaped. Great stuff Anne and may you well and truly R.I.P. A real loss to the cycling franternity, not to mention her surviving family. A cycling LEGEND and Anne should be remembered as such !

I was so sorry to finish this book that I read it again. Anne's travels are very inspiring and she narrated them with an accomplished, easy, style. Every trip Anne made was a learning curve for her, but she gets by admirably using her love of meeting people and ability to make the most of all situations. All her books are worth reading, but this one most appealed to me. After reading it, you'll want to travel by bicycle, but probably not as far as Anne.
