Product Description

Product Description

Fifty years before the birth of Christ, in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, there reigned a young queen renowned for her beauty, guile and charm: Cleopatra. Politically astute and talented, she sought to protect her nation against the threat of Rome through her love affairs - first with the Roman ruler Julius Caesar and then with the rebel general Mark Antony, until the day in 30 BC when the Roman legions of Octavion stood at the gates of the city. Antony committed suicide; Cleopatra died by her own hand; Egypt fell to Rome. This work explores the history and the myth of this legendary woman who has magnetically captured the imagination of writers and artists from Plutarch to Shakespeare and Cecil B. DeMille.

A good afternoon read 19 Aug 2010
By Mem
When we hear the name Cleopatra it inspires us to think of the East and Egypt as an orientalist, exotic sensual place which, challenged the rise of Rome the bearer of the West. In reality Cleopatra was a forward thinking reformer, Nationalsit and a shrewd lady who with her intelligence and determination made Rome tremble by sucessfully challenging them and as history is written by the winners she was depicted as being a licentious temptress which until recently is now being succesfully challenged. The only tiny flaws are is that there are various accounts of her detah that are not mentioned only the snake bit theory and it would be good if other accounts were given equal status. The only other flaw is that although her family the Ptolomies were Macedonian they were not Greek but Thracian in origin which is slightly misinforming. The New Horizon series are a good collection of great general read on various topics for a long journey or an afternoon rest with a good overview on a subject whilst being very informal making it easy to read and enjoyable with good Illustrations and writting style.
