I bought one of these because I'd seen the bigger version of this unit work well in conference rooms and was pleased that it plugged into my Mac without any fuss. This one is smaller and suitable for a home office worker. The critical thing about a unit like this is that it avoids echoes properly (even when there is a lot of latency on the connection) and that your voice is clear to the people on the other end of the line. Feedback on audio quality from people I've been on calls with is good. The LED that changes from blue to red when you are on mute is a nice touch, and the mute button is easy to hit. Looks a bit pricey compared with similar units but I'm happy with mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works beautifully with GoToMeeting 26 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase
We bought several of these units for use with GoToMeeting. We wanted a solution to allow multiple people in an office to join a meeting once via VOIP and to be able to speak and hear clearly and with no feedback. This is the perfect solution for this use case.

The other thing that we are using these for is for people who do a lot of meetings or VOIP calls, have the privacy of their own office (or home office) and don't like wearing headphones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is it worth it? 11 Sep 2010
By Bob Tobias - Published on Amazon.com

The video is an audio comparision between the microphone part of the Chat 50 and the microphone that's built into my Asus netbook.

From a usability standpoint this thing couldn't have been easier to use. With both Windows XP and Windows 7 it was plug and immediately play.

BTW, I feel that honest, effective reviews, accompanied by detailed videos, can take the place of first-hand experiences that are often lacking in online shopping. I've always appreciated the help I've received from other reviewers and try to return the favor as best as I can. I hope you found this review helpful and the video at least entertaining. If there was anything you thought was lacking or unclear leave a comment and I'll do what I can to fix it.

4.0 out of 5 stars First full-duplex USB speakerphone 9 Aug 2006
By Jerry Saperstein - Published on Amazon.com
The ClearOne Chat 50 is a unique product. It is a full-duplex USB speakerphone that can be used with your computer for Voice over Internet Protocol (i.e., Skype, Vonage), for audio or audio/video conferencing, online chat with instant messenger programs or online gaming. It is full-duplex: both parties can be speaking at the same time. Half-duplex is far more common, where only one person at a time can speak.

Installation is simple, although be sure to check for driver and firmware updates. The firmware update crashed my Windows XP system, though without serious damage.

As a microphone, the audio quality is top-notch. As a conference mike, it is very sensitive. I was able to comfortably listen to a recording made while I was about eight feet away and speaking in a normal voice. In that same normal voice, I was also audible out to about fifteen feet. Echo cancellation is excellent.

As a speaker, the Chat 50 is suprisingly capable. Sound is crisp, somewhat flat, but perfectly usable for voice, movies and streaming music.

Accessory cables allow you to use the Chat 50 with cell phones, some jack equipped phone systems, MP3 players and videoconferencing equipment. All in all, a very capable full-duplex speakerphone. The one drawback is that it has no battery power capability. It must be used with USB power or a somewhat bulky, but not huge, AC power adapter.

Overall, a pricey but very worthwhile full-duplex speakerphone for anyone who uses VoIP a lot, webcams or voice chats.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Microphone for Skype 27 Dec 2010
By Emily B. - Published on Amazon.com

We use Skype for most business calls at my company. I use this microphone/speaker for Skyping. It is very easy to use and the sound quality is pretty good. Sometimes there seems to be echoing but this could be from Skype instead of the Chat 50.
