The spring air was clean and fresh as we left the forest and entered the alpine meadows. The path before us started to rise and track through a rocky defile. Suddenly the very air around us was rent asunder as a vast field of snow fell from the peaks above us to block the way forward. Undeterred we stripped the packs from our backs, assembled the collapsible shovels and began to work away at the glistening mass before us. We were clearing the path to ascend.

Smashing. Crushing. Powerful. Atmospheric. Touching. Transcendent. Exactly what you look for in a YOB record on every second of every track. If you thought Pallbearer were the only game in town as far as Doom album of the year goes, you're wrong. YOB build mountains of sound and let the epic sweeping of the tides erode them away into sand and seas. A must have for doom fans in 2014.

Ascendancy. 10 Sep 2014

I've always been on the fence when it came to Yob. I liked their previous releases, but none of them really got me there. "Clearing the Path" hits me in all the right places and manages to do it without ever being boring. If you like doom, drone, or psychadelic, then make sure you give this one a spin.

Yob music that pummels and caresses at the same time 21 Sep 2014
By Scott Hedegard - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Yob fans know this band is right up there with Pallbearer as the two best doom bands out there, forget Electric Wizard. We who love doom overall mourn the breakup of Cathedral, but Yob not only provide the doom, they stretch it out to the point of breaking, like silly putty. "Clearing the Path to Ascend" is heavier tone wise than the predecessor, "Atma", although that classic certainly is no slouch. Sonically speaking, the production harkens back to "The Great Cessation", or "The Unreal Never Lives", two very brutal albums indeed. However, Mike Scheidt throws a few curves this time around, particularly the second track, "Nothing to Lose", which, for Yob, moves at a bit faster tempo, a deep gutteral roar throughout, and relatively short at over 11:00, which is almost single territory for a band that can keep you mesmerized for 20 plus minute opuses without batting an eye. "Nothing to Lose" is actually closer to a straight ahead rocker than anything they've done, but the real standout is the closer "Marrow", which explores heaviness and psychedelia in equal terms, slamming you down, caressing you for a while, letting you eventually drift away at songs' end. It's quite incredible, and truth be told, shows that Yob are a doom band in the most general sense of the term. As far as this reviewer is concerned, Yob make Yob music - hard to define, impossible to resist. Ascending with Yob is to do so in a vehicle so heavy you'd never think it could get off the ground, but somehow does. Along with Pallbearer, one of the two best doom bands in America.

Album Experience 1 Nov 2014
By Ruben - Published on

In the world of metal, it's sometimes hard to get lost among the hundreds of choices you have, especially when you are craving for a full album experience. Often, we find works with a good 50% of worthy material while the other 50%; well, let's say that if you get interrupted by a phone call or an unexpected visitor, you won't be really bothered.
Yob have always stood firmly on the higher side of the spectrum. "Clearing The Path To Ascend" is, without a doubt, one of those rare albums that you'll be coming back to again and again. One of those discs that won't let you try anything else once it's done with you.
With only for songs, "Clearing..." sends you on a journey of introspection that, in this day and age, very few artists manage to achieve. The level of musicianship and the soulful delivery are up there with the best albums by Neurosis and Rwake, to name only a couple..This is music for the patient and dedicated listener. A mandatory reference for today's metal.

Awesome album! These guys are definitely the ultimate doom band out there right now. I have all of their albums, best one thus far. I can't stop listening to it. Great job Mike, Travis, and Aaron.
