Loosely set around an enormous shopping complex, this novel delivers an array of different characters. Each is well-drawn and covers an impressive range, from an aging chanteuse to a shady ex-secret service agent. My favourites are Jimmy Patel, the washed-up cricketer and Peter Jones; a lifestyle journalist who writes ironic articles on consumer products, only to be brought to realise his own baser needs in the very temple of consumerism itself. These diverse voices add up to a narrative that is not comforting us with the unbreakable human spirit but taking aim at modern Britain. Impressive and well-written, this is right on the money. Clearwater intrigued me, made me smile, entertained me and made me think. Recommended.

Reading this is as exciting as the first time you read Alan Warner or David Mitchell, you feel like someone with real ability is writing about Britain, in the way that Pynchon or Delillo would write about the US. The book is darkly comic, ranging and urgent and Ashon's voice is very different. It's also really hard to put down, which just about tops it off as one of best books I've read in a long time.

I bought this on a whim and it felt really good to discover something like this. It's funny, intense, intelligent and plain old exciting. I haven't read any new writers recently that can be literary but also really addictive. Would definitely recommend this.

Positively indecipherable
I cannot believe people have said this is a wonderful book - it's one of the worst I have ever read. The characters were either psychopathic or pathetic losers. Read more

Not What I Expected
From what I had read about this book and from it's cover (possibly one of the least well conceived in publishing history), I was expecting a light hearted look at Britain's... Read more

Clear Water is a brave novel. It attempts to spin a yarn of hi-tech invasion of privacy; corporate corruption; espionage; fear and consumerism. Read more

The King's new clothes
I totally agree with Jonathan P. This is an over hyped piece of rubbish. I feel JP is being generous in his discription of the characters as 2 dimensional, they are, at best,one... Read more

A stunning critique of contemporary England!
This is an amazing debut novel. If you're a fan of the Delillos, Foster Wallaces and Pynchons of the world, it's a joy to discover a British writer who treats England with the same... Read more
