That this album has seen the light of day, is a blessing in itself.
Gone are the days when the hottest session "players" (that name!!) would be able to release self-congratulatory chops-fests willy-nilly.
Which brings me on to the second blessing: -
The solo count is very low indeed.
If anything, it would have been fine to hear the UK's favourite drummer stretch out a bit more, as well as hearing a bit more experimentation from the incredible Aziz Ibrahim.
For the uninititated, the common link here is Paul Weller to a degree, yet his influence is conspicuous by it's absence. This is nothing like the Weller instrumental album some might have expected.
It would be too easy to throw around names like the Meters, MG's, Santana etc., as these guys have enough clout to stand on their own. What I would look for in the next album though, is slightly less emphasis on groove, and more experimentation. Wouldn't it be nice to see a funk/groove band cross back into jazz quarters in this day & age, and get away with it?
Could The Players become a truly modern classic, and make friends in both camps?
Only time will tell.

Simply a great album. If you are into 70's funk and groove this album is a must. Track (1) has a taste of the Commodores' Machine Gun with a little Rose Royce. All the tracks are well recorded, not over produced and are a testiment to the 'players' professional career. TURN IT UP LOUD and feel the groove.

Great record... 7 Feb 2008
Format:Audio CD
Thoroughly enjoyed the music... loved the music. Gimme more. I hear they are working on their 3rd CD now. I can't wait. BUY IT!!

Thanks to the musicians.

Does anyone know if "Clear the Decks" comes with any insert? Mine didn't (all that was there was the CD itself and an empty spot where a product insert would go) and I wonder about it... I'm one of those neurotic guys that has to know!

Gracias.
