Product Description

Introducing Detective Chief Inspector Tom Caton. Christmas approaches. A killer dressed as a clown haunts the streets of Manchester. For him the City’s miraculous regeneration had unacceptable consequences. This is the reckoning. DCI Tom Caton enlists the help of forensic profiler Kate Webb, placing her in mortal danger.

The trail leads from the site of the old mass cholera graves, through Moss Side, the Gay Village, the penthouse opulence of canalside apartment blocks, and the bustling Christmas Market, to the Victorian Gothic grandeur of the Town Hall.

Time is running out. For Tom, for Kate…and for the City.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge a book by its cover 3 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
The cover might not give too much away, but this is a solid first novel from a new crime author. If you're familiar with the TV detective mysteries Prime Suspect and Cracker, you'll be at home on the streets of Manchester as the charismatic detective and forensic specialist follow the trail of a masked and inventive serial killer.

Although the last act comes very late into the book (20-odd pages from the end and they still don't know whodunit) and wraps up quickly, protagonist Tom Caton is a well-drawn sympathetic leading man and is surely good for a few more adventures.

Since the book is of the publish-on-demand kind you may need to overlook distractions from occasional typos in the text, but all in all The Cleansing is a fitting addition to the police procedural genre, and Bill Rogers is a new author worthy of our support.

The main character was a refreshing change from the hard bitten, womanising, drunken maverick we usually get in crime novels but I agree with the reviewer who said he was a bit too good to be true and could do with some bad habits or prejudices. Perhaps the characters will develop more in later books. Even though I know Manchester well, I found the incessant descriptions of routes and road names a bit too much. It often read more like an AA route planner than a novel. The editing was the worst I have experienced on kindle with cars, names, what people were doing all changing or repeating over the space of a few pages which definitely detracted. Overall I enjoyed the story and it kept my interest enough to keep reading. I would give another one a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Cleansing 11 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
From the very first page, the author's great knowledge of Manchester is used as a backdrop to an almost bizarre murder enquiry. Tom Caton is most believable as a DCI, in fact he comes across as normal and professional, this unique approach is quite refreshing. The team are introduced and built upon and with Bill Rodgers understanding of police procedure make this an exciting read.

An interesting character, Well drawn but the relationship thing was a bit predictable. The plot was slightly pedestrian but it was still a good read. I'd read more of his.
