Product Description

Product Description

Christmas approaches. A killer dressed as a clown haunts the streets of Manchester. For him the City's miraculous regeneration had unacceptable consequences. This is the reckoning. DCI Tom Caton enlists the help of forensic profiler Kate Webb, placing her in mortal danger. The trail leads from the site of the old mass cholera graves, through Moss Side, the Gay Village, the penthouse opulence of canalside apartment blocks, and the bustling Christmas Market, to the Victorian Gothic grandeur of the Town Hall. Time is running out. For Tom, for Kate...and for the City.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge a book by its cover, 3 Aug 2009
By M. Atherton (Reading, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The cover might not give too much away, but this is a solid first novel from a new crime author. If you're familiar with the TV detective mysteries Prime Suspect and Cracker, you'll be at home on the streets of Manchester as the charismatic detective and forensic specialist follow the trail of a masked and inventive serial killer.

Although the last act comes very late into the book (20-odd pages from the end and they still don't know whodunit) and wraps up quickly, protagonist Tom Caton is a well-drawn sympathetic leading man and is surely good for a few more adventures.

Since the book is of the publish-on-demand kind you may need to overlook distractions from occasional typos in the text, but all in all The Cleansing is a fitting addition to the police procedural genre, and Bill Rogers is a new author worthy of our support.

1.0 out of 5 stars didn't grab, 21 Jun 2009
Poor pace and not enough characterisation.
It's ok if you want to know about police procedure. Nothing really happened outside and not enough desciption of Manchester to set the scene.
Dialogue a bit wooden and contrived. In all, a let down.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read!, 8 April 2009

"The Cleansing" Bill Rogers is a really good read, I literally couldn't put it down and loved it... a definite 5 stars (are there 6?) It's a police drama thriller in the best tradition, set in Manchester and you really get to know the team of modern detectives with their scientific and sensitive methods - so unlike those stereotypical thuggish 80s cops... the murder plot is intriguing (I won't say more because it may spoil the suspense and that ending!) and a love interest too. I can see it becoming a TV series a film even. Fully recommended and it "feels a proper book" the paper, print and cover are all just "right".
