Product Description

Product Description

We diligently scrub, launder, deodorise and disinfect ourselves and our surroundings, in order to ensure our continued good health and well-being. But the shocking fact is that many of the products we use to ensure that we are clean and protected are made from highly toxic chemicals. We buy these products in good faith in supermarkets and shops and use them in our daily efforts towards good hygiene, unaware that they contain a range of ingredients known to cause, among other things, hormone disruption, mood swings, birth defects and even cancer. 'Cleaning Yourself to Death' takes a thorough look at the range of everyday cleaning products in our cupboards: what they contain, how they are sold and how we overuse them. Pat Thomas begins her campaigning book with comprehensive information about the skin and respiratory systems and how chemicals are absorbed through them. She then takes an in-depth look at the toiletries and household products we all use, and their adverse effects on our health. Full of practical, hard-hitting information, valuable tips on how to lessen our exposure to toxins and natural, effective alternatives, this book is a must for every home. If you are interested in natural living, green issues, or alternative health this book is invaluable. As well as providing detailed information on chemicals and ingredients present in commercial cleaning products, it also includes tips and recipes for home-made cleaners and personal hygeine products. The structure and layout of the book is such that you do not have to read it cover to cover but can dip in and out of any section. Within a week or so I had banished my usual kitchen and bathroom cleaners with great ease and relief!

Excellent but scary 30 July 2001
Format:Paperback
At first I wasn't sure whether or not to believe what the author was saying, but having checked out the Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace websites for corroboration, I am convinced and beginning to clear out my kitchen and bathroom. One of the best features of the book is the information on how to make your own cleaning products and toiletries - we can be free of the people peddling us this stuff if we want to be.
