Product Description

Manchester-based, kick-boxing PI Kate Brannigan takes on the hard men of European organised crime as she battles to recover a Monet in a case that stretches love and loyalty to the limits.Manchester-based private eye Kate Brannigan is not amused when thieves have the audacity to steal a Monet from a stately home where she’s arranged security. She’s even less thrilled when the hunt for the thieves drags her on a treacherous foray across Europe as she goes head to head with organized crime. And as if that isn’t enough, a routine industrial case starts leaving a trail of bodies across the Northwest, giving Kate more problems than she can deal with.Cleaning up the mess in Clean Break forces Kate to confront harsh truths in her own life as she battles with a testing array of villains in a case that stretches love and loyalty to the limits.

I have all read all the books in the Kate Brannigan series and I have to admit that this is my least favorite of the series. Maybe its because much of the story is set outside her usual location of Manchester and instead feautures Brannigan spending a lot of time driving around in Europe which takes away some of the excitement from the story. However aside from these gripes I still enjoyed it. Due to the feisty heroines sarcatic one liners and the clever twist at the end. I love detective novels and usually go for writers like Michael Connelly and Robert Crais but Val McDermid certainly gives them a run for their money creating a character thats tough and smart but with a heart of gold which ends up inevitably getting her in to even more trouble. But means that even even when sorting out the bad guys using her finely honed thai boxing skills she never lose touch with her feminine side. A must for fans of detective stories especially if you want something a bit different to the usual brooding male detectives.

a bit different from the usual broding and original

By Mr. D. J. Carr VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
There are only five Brannigan books, each fairly short, and the reader benefits from reading them in chronological order. You will then not only appreciate her Warshawski-type ironic humour transplanted to working-class Manchester, but you'll also understand more about why she ends up in charge plus the growing appreciation of her off-beat relationship with her semi-detached boyfriend. Read and enjoy - then you'll wish Ms McDermid had written more of them.

Not enough! 18 Nov 2003
By Kel
Format:Paperback
I have only one complaint about the Kate Brannigan series of novels and that is there aren't enough. I love the main character and all her mates. I feel part of the gang the moment I pick up one of the books, and this one, where she nearly gives up completely on her on/off boyfriend and hauls me through Europe is my favourite so far. More please!
