Blood on the snow,
By
This review is from: Claymore Vol.5-6 [DVD] (DVD)
Third volume in the anime series [Japanese cartoons, for those not in the know. Not that they'll probably read this] about Clare. In a world where humans are prey to horrible demon creatures called Yoma, human/monster hybrids called Claymores are the only ones with the strengths to fight the monsters. Clare is one of the Claymores. This is not though a good jumping on point as it continues from where volume two left off with no exposition for new viewers, so they are better off starting with volume one. As with the previous volume, this contains eight episodes that all run roughly twenty two minutes in length. They are spread across two discs. The menu allows you to play them all, but to select an individual one you have to scroll through a list of them. It can be watched either with dubbed English dialogue. Or in Japanese with English subtitles. The episodes here are almost non stop fighting action, with a few quieter moments in the middle where characters can catch their breath. And deliver exposition. The fight scenes do keep upping their game as the Claymores have three very different sets of opposition to face. Whilst there are a lot of characters, and some do make more of an impression than others, you do get used to most of them. And thus it does have an emotional impact when bad things happen. The second episode is one of the above mentioned quieter moments and this does allow for some excellent moments of characterisation. There's also a lot of flashbacks as characters are haunted by their pasts. These and the fights do manage to stop short of being repetitive. The animation does use static backgrounds so it can look a little cheap at points, but at others it's quite beautiful, especially in the way in depicts the frozen northern region in which these episodes take place. It's one of those series that has an ending and is reasonably self contained, but at the same time leaves lots of loose ends and set up for potential future storylines. Which only seem to be available in graphic novel form at present. So here's hoping more dvds follow one day. Because this is a great series and this will leave you wanting to know what happens to these characters next. Epileptics be aware that all the swordplay in the fight scenes does result in a lot of flashing images. The same occurs at the start of each disc. DVD extras are as follows: Disc one: An audio commentary on one episode. An interview with the art settings designer. The opening and closing credits and music without any text. Disc two: Another audio commentary on one episode. The original tv commercials for the show. A production art gallery. And the opening and closing credits and music without text once again.

Claymore - cutting edge Anime,

This review is from: Claymore Vol.5-6 [DVD] (DVD)
Many Anime series tend to end poorly - but not so here. The story just keeps going right to the end .. and a good set up for the sequel which wil hopefully follow.
It is a great little series - with only 6 discs, it offers good viewing in short order. Tall thin beautiful blondes hacking demons to pieces with big swords and super powers .. what else do you need, except maybe a curry and some larger.

First watched this as a fan sub on the net thought it was good. Having watched the dubbed version its even better the english voice actors have done an excelent job and each voice fits thier character. An excelent anime. An unusual ending leaving it open for another series maybe.
